Do you keep that red car on a charger or a charger on the car?

Today I decided to start the repairs on the V70 rear bumper. Someone who shall not be named (but not me) backed the car into the garage door pillar and broke the LHR bumper mount top screw retaining clip off the mounting bracket.

I love working on old cars so much, as you never know what has gone on before you owned the car. My discoveries included:

1) One of the 4 elongated nuts inside the car below the tailgate holding the rear bumper on was loose. On removing it I discovered it was not the correct part. It was a shortened sleeve and a nut.
2) On removing the bumper, I discovered the reason for that. The rear panel was bent inwards from an impact. The correct elongated nut would not fit as it would be too long to thread into place. I am currently panel massaging to get it straight again. Then I will need a replacement nut.
3) The LHR mount has clearly been (badly) plastic repaired previously. I had thought I could plastic weld it and keep it as a spare, but it is deformed so will just get junked. I have a good used one to use.
4) The damage to the rear panel has cracked the paint requiring a small localized paint repair to prevent worsening corrosion.

I was planning to remove the Volvo tow hitch until I realized they cut a 3" cube out of the rear bumper cover to make it fit. Removing it would leave a goofy cut-out on the rear bumper. I was going to give the bumper to BlackLab who is looking for one, but I will have to go back on that promise which I don't like doing. Why would Volvo design such a stupid bumper and tow-hitch without a facility to fit a tow-hitch without damaging the bumper? At least I know where there is another hitch for sale so I will find out how much it will cost.

So now what should have been a 1 hour job has escalated into a 2nd day of repairs before I can refit the bumper. I will also have to wait for the new inserts for the LHS in the bumper as they took the brunt of the damage. They will hopefully arrive tomorrow from FCP. They did a great job getting me the parts when Canadian dealers said the color insert was on 6-8 week back order and the chrome plastic insert was NLA. FCP found both and had them in 4 days and shipped. Price with shipping is about the same as discounted Canadian dealer price.

Did I say I love working on old cars??

Oh, I forgot. On removing the the LHR bumper mount I noticed the rear muffler is badly corroded. Great............

Replaced cylinder 1 ignition coil on the wife’s XC due to misfiring. Finally threw a code after driving about 100km. Misfire was intermittent and only when I floored it.

To anyone who I might have forgotten or promised something, I am sorry. Life has taken many turns. I also lost my cat of 16 years after almost a month of daily trips to the vet and IVs. I've had no time for anything.

Well today I was 'forced' to go to PnP junkyard! :o

The 02 XC70 I helped backed to health about 18 months ago needs some TLC. The PnP yards had a 50% off everything weekend, it has been a long time since we last had one, maybe 3-4 years? Occasionally a 40% off on some stuff since the start of Covid.

The 02 had an argument with a deer 2 days after being returned to the road! Ideally it needs a front bumper cover and possibly a slam panel to fix the front section. Also the rear bumper looks like someone has driven over something and then driver forwards cracking the bumper in 2 places either side of the raised center section. With bumpers on at about $45 CDN this weekend it was worth a shot. Not many XC70's, and 01 (hopeful), and 04 (possibly a blue not black bumper) and an 06 in blue, so likely a blue bumper and we need black covers. Needless to say the 01 was also blue. I guess most silver XC70's had blue bumper covers and trim. Bummer!

However, all was not lost! A radio is required so we pulled a HU-613, HU-803 and a HU-650. The car owner could not remember which his car has. I noticed immediately that the HU-803 is different in that it only had one rectangular connector on the back and a round multiplug. I know it also has an under-seat amplifier, as there was a young guy just ahead of us pulling it out. Darn!

Hopefully one of these will work and if nothing else I can test some of the hearsay v's reality on what may or may not work on the 02 head unit wise.

A power steering pump was also added to the list as it is complaining loudly, and as it was really accessible on the 06.

A cruise control unit attached to the gas pedal in an 850 was also needed by another friend. Fortunately there was a solitary 94 850 which gave it's up. Shame as it was a stick shift and the body did not look too bad.

Not a bad haul and for 50% off, bargain!! :D

Well got a shock today. I was so pleased to find a nice trunk plastic mat for one of the P2 wagons. After cleaning it though it looked to me that it was the wrong shape, even though it came from beside an 06 XC70. I did not think to check it and it was not possible as the yard had filled the trunk area with discarded parts from around the car. It also had VOLVO molded into it.

After doing some research is looks like it came from an 00-04 S40 most likely. Strange thing is there is one in the yard, but that is in row 8 and the XC70 in row 27??

It only cost about $5 but I will have to find a home for it as I won't keep it as I don't even know anyone with that model of car.
