HELP With Brakes. Topic is solved

I thought I posted an answer to this, but I must have gotten distracted. The vehicle is a daily driver, my daughter drives it. However I ordered a scan tool capable of an ABS brake bleed, so thats where I go next, soon as it arrives.

I think I may have a similar issue, but would like thoughts. Background- my daughter came home from college with the rear caliper not releasing on her 2009 s60. The wheel was smoking hot. No ABS lights at the time. I purchased and installed a caliper, new wheel hub and pads. Afterwards, I got a service abs code along with faulty speed sensor code for that wheel. I figured the heat cooked it, or maybe the wire was damaged in the repair process, so ordered a new sensor and installed. No change. My scanner can give live speed readings for each wheel so I confirm there is no signal. I can clear the code, but immediately comes back when driving. I read somewhere that some wheel hubs lack the encoder, so to be sure, I put the old bearing back in. No change. Decided I didn’t trust the sensor I put in, so bought and installed better one to no avail. Kinda flabbergasted!
So, is my real problem the bleeding procedure? Would that keep an abs sensor on one wheel from reading? BTW, brake operation feels normal.

If the wheel moves the speed sensor should pick that up, the brake working or not on that wheel doesn't matter. It sounds like either your wiring or the connector to the speed sensor got damaged.

Yeah, I’ve checked the pins in the harness and appear to be good. Almost ready to cut it out and Hotwire it to be sure. I’m on my 3rd sensor so pretty sure it’s not that. The signal wasn’t lost until after the brake work, so didn’t know if something about the bleeding or change in the fluid pressure set something off in the ABS module. All other wheels are reading speed correctly. Just strange!

I’ve determined that the harness is ok. Wondering if my non-Volvo branded sensor is the issue. I’ve replaced other abs sensors on Volvos with aftermarkets with no problem, however it’s my last idea!
Anyone have problems with aftermarket sensors, and any input on if there are other aftermarket sensors that worked? Otherwise I’ll likely just bite the bullet and buy a Volvo sensor.

Speed sensors are my nemesis...trust me. I have a Toyota where only OEM sensors will work, I dont care who makes it, only ones from toyota work...otherwise they throw codes.

here are a couple things to check..
1) Make sure your tone ring is good (pic attached) - just incase you are unaware - the tone ring is the gear-looking thing on the hub. Your sensor sits just above it. the ring should not be missing any teeth. More than likely yours it good, however you can eliminate that.

2) check the hole that the sensor sits in and make sure it is clear. you should be able to see through the hole as well as see the teeth on the tone ring. Its not uncommon for dirt, grease etc to get in there and even a broken piece of an old sensor all of which can block/interfere with the signal.

3) make sure the end of the sensor is clean. once installed. if there is debris, the sensor can pick it up during the installation process

I appreciate the advice. I didn’t realize they could be so picky. I made some progress since my last post…I have 2 s60’s (2008&2009, One for each daughter!) Not sure why I didn’t think of this sooner, but I took the sensor from the 2008 & installed it in the 2009. It worked, so, I know it’s the sensor, and not something else, and TRQ & A1 auto sensors don’t work! Should have known better.
Going a Volvo sensor because I’m tired of installing sensors (getting pretty good at it now). They are pretty steep at about $125.

I had good luck with ATE speed sensors from FCP. If available- they are OE and fraction of the cost of "blue box".

Second successful story with ATE sensors on both Volvo and VW platforms. BMW too, RIP
