PCV Banjo bolt update - Part # 31325709 Topic is solved

Still working on the parts list for my friends son's 06 S60 2.5T AWD cylinder head repair/removal.

I recall reading something about the P2 engines having an 'upgraded' PCV banjo bolt. I think it is the one on the intake manifold and something to do with a ball seal v's none.

I think this may be the part number, but what confuses me from the Volvo drawing is this is listed as the same part # on the Volvo drawing for the other end of the hose that goes into the block above the transmission (#15 on the drawing):

Can someone clarify this for me and if possible the correct part number needed please?

The banjo bolt update was a change in the ball valve retention. THis is the bolt at the manifold. Early part had a pin pressed in to retain the ball in the bolt. Later bolts had a crimp or other closure on the bolt. Early bolts were reported to have a few loose pins getting sucked in the engine with bad results.
I don't think Volvo had a substitution, but cautious people get the later bolt.
I don't have part numbers. FCP may have info.

I thought that mod'd part was pricey at $75 CDN, but compared to the 'cheap' plastic crap part it is cheap. The crappy plastic part (part # 9202208 at nearly $70 CDN it is a bargain!

Still not sure though on the upgraded banjo bolt. However, when I looked to the end of the attached video in the linked thread the guy shows an MVS link to a XC90 2.5T and the part number is that one I linked up earlier: # 31325709.

I had a bad banjo bolt destroy the top end on a P2 car. So I sorted through this issue and interpret that the most updated part is 31325709. On all my P2 cars I replace the banjo bolt pre-emptively with a 31325709, unless there is a record it's been done already.

I just replaced the banjo bolt on my S60 R with a 31325709 today during a radiator swap. I went with this method, which does not involve loosening any intake manifold bolts:
- remove upper coolant hose (it was already out, of course)
- remove the serpentine belt
- unbolt the PS pump and lift it out of the way
- remove the three alternator mounting bolts
- loosen the lower two mounting bolts for the AC compressor so they stick out about 1 cm
- alternator now flops out of the way and it is a breeze to access and replace the banjo bolt

The snorkel tube (30731007, indeed) is right there and you could perhaps replace it this way at the same time, but I'm not sure. I'll save that for when I do a full PCV service.

Great information as usual! Many thanks. The whole head will have to come off for repairs due to #3 spark plug believing it was not needed and blew out it's threads and left the chat. Hopefully there are no other surprises and the head can be repaired. The PnP yards have now decided to pull another making scam of charging for a whole engine even if you only take the head. So, $500 CDN for something you have no idea is any good, and no refunds, only instore credit......................

I did see some evidence of valve impressions on #3 cylinder piston from the 2 exhaust valves.

Is that $500 with the engine pulled or fo you have to do that work? That’s rich , indeed

Nope you have to pull the motor, then trek it through the yard on a barrow, and then load it into your car. The larger yard has a winch lift to raise the motor in the parking lot, but that is not much help unless you have a truck to load it into.

PnP have gotten out of control in their pricing to the point where some parts I will pay a bit more for a new aftermarket or in some case the blue box part.

It is not the same fun place to visit. The long time staff though are great. We have a laugh, but I never give them grief on pricing as they have no control on that. We do discuss the pricing though!

Here is a picture of several Volvo P2 banjo bolts:

From left to right: New style check valve with drilled pin holes and a roll pin pressed through the holes (no crimp), old style with crimped pin retention on the end of the banjo bolt and the pin is still present, old style with missing crimped pin and no check valve guts because they went into cylinder 3, and on the right, cooling/oil system banjo bolt which has no guts.

After the guts of the check valve destroy the engine valves and top of the piston in cylinder 3, they then go out an exhaust valve and destroy the turbo vanes on the hot side:

Thankfully the engine is running perfectly after replacing the head, piston 3 and piston rings, and turbo.
The three other turbo Volvos in my list below had the PCV banjo bolt replaced as one of the first service updates!
