So I am close to completing a parts list of what gaskets I will need for the cylinder head refresh following my friends son's car blowing a sparkplug out of cylinder #3 stripping the threads in the head.
I have looked at gasket sets, but there seems to be variations in P2 engines including I believe a possible difference in valve stem diameters. I am looking at the Victor Reinz kit, but it does not give you any help in which parts go where, and as some older engines have no intake cvvt solenoid they also seem to have different diameter camshaft seals. The kit has a bunch of what looks like multiple camshaft seals, but I looking at is I have no idea if it has all the gaskets I need for the head.
Has anyone used this kit on a B5254T2 engine and know from experience if the kit had all the parts you needed or if you had to supplement it?
https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.ph ... &jsn=10707
The only other one they sell at Rock Auto that seems to be for this engine is from Mahle Clevite but is more than double the price:

Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Neil.

I though the big changeover to 6 mm stems happened in p80 in 1999 and all P2s were 6mm?

The Volvo dealer parts guy mentioned there is a difference. There are different valve stem seals for engines
Intake engine #'s -1817652 : 3517893 and Supersession(s): 3517860
and
engine #'s 1817653- : 9443787
They seem to list only one for the exhaust for everything as far as I can see:
Exhaust : 31316151 and Supersession(s): 31258324
Volvo does sell a kit which consists of 24 valve seals of part# 9443787 and 12 sleeves of part# 9139539 it is part # 274344
It is on back order currently which means a potential 6-8week delay
Volvo does sell another 'kit' with a GCP name attached but I was told this is only for engine #'s -1817652. However, confusingly it also only appears to have one valve stem seal in the kit but I cannot find what part number it is. Kit: 272424 - Again it is on back order. However, you can buy it direct from GCP.se for about the same price to me in Canada but received in 2 weeks over the 6-8 weeks from Volvo.
Now I am going to assume the engine part numbers are for the blocks as I don't think the heads are individually stamped, which does not explain if that covers 2.4 and 2.5 liter engines or turbo/NA
Now you understand why this is not as easy as you think.
The Victor Reinz kit according to IPDUSA is for engine #'s from 2979611-
This is the kit and IPD list what it fits lower on the page including R and T-5 motors.
https://www.ipdusa.com/products/70667/H ... ,1076,1135
Again, it does not clarify if there are 2 different valve stem seals or if they are all the same diameter and are to the exhaust spec?
Anyd you thought valve stem seals were easy..............
At least now with a lot more digging I have been able to clarify this would appear to be the correct kit for the engine we need, although there is still a question mark on the valve stem seals!

Well latest update is I don't have to panic on this timewise any more. My buddies ex-wife went out and had a friend of friends who buys cars at dealer auctions buy the son a 2016 Mercedes Benz 250 GLA. She has always hated the Volvo as the dad bought it from a friend/old colleague and she did not ok it even though she knows zip about cars.
I spent about a full day (and not the 8hr type, but the full 24hr) and many emails with my Volvo parts friend identifying parts, removing parts from the list and even on to Sweden to get parts errors resolved on websites.
I now have an almost complete list, and will get my buddy to confirm what parts we use or not. I have 2 lists, one all OE parts and one using aftermarket good quality parts (like the Victor Reinz headset). No the car will be sold once repaired so we need to see what we need as a minimum. If we are successful pulling this off, then I will post here the parts list and part numbers in case anyone else can use it.
The issue now is if the work will get done at all and the car is sold as is as a mechanics special or scrapped. The dad may want the car fixed still and sell it but the effort involved may see little return as the car still needs a windshield and at that point it is only worth what is possibly put into it. If there is a chance to make more selling it as a good running car with some return then it may get repaired.

Sell as is. Engine repair effort is far greater than what you could get for a running car. If you still want it running, it is quicker to replace the engine.
I did almost the complete engine rebuild ~5 years ago (did not touch main bearings, because they rarely go bad in this engine), with welding a hot tank and polishing the head on IKEA kitchen table and piece of thick glass. It was long, expensive, laborious, and I started to trust my job only a year after. If I wasn't going to keep the car, it would go to junk yard.

Given the situation, I would opt to place a screw-in type insert(not heli-coil) into this car. It will be decently cheap and likely will work for a long time if done correctly. Who cares if some shavings will not be cleaned 100%, noone is planning to take it to Dakar anyway. And then donate the car to some family in need or right away to some trade school that needs cars to work on(I understand that those might no longer be available).

I did look at the replacement engine route, but nothing worth having around here currently. I was offered a 50k mile engine delivered for about $2600 CDN ( <$2000) from a trusted supplier which was removed from a crashed running car, and was cylinder pressure tested. At that price we can rebuild the head. Local PnP junkyards only sell complete engines, and you have no idea what mileage or condition they are in, so a huge lottery.
I am going to do a parts run through with my former Volvo mechanic buddy to identify what we can minimize to for the build cost wise. I am thinking maybe in the $1500 CDN range or less (which will include my buddies labor). Either way it is a 10-12 hour job.
The whole think though is likely to become a moot point as my buddies ex-wife determined he had to have another car without discussion and bought him a Mercedes 250 GLA (2015/6?) with about 75k miles on it. Kicker is she expects my buddy to pay half..............!
Thanks for all the inputs. If this goes anywhere I will update. If it gets rebuilt I will also try to include a parts listing should anyone want to do a cylinder head rebuild/swap in the future.
We never answered the question though. Only Volvo OE head gasket or use the Victor Reinz one?
Neil.

It has to be a multi-layer steel (MLS) gasket. As long as it MLS, the supplier does not matter much. Not as picky as old gaskets were.scot850 wrote: 03 Jul 2026, 00:24 We never answered the question though. Only Volvo OE head gasket or use the Victor Reinz one?

I just got confirmation that the cylinder head gasket in the Victor Reinz cylinder head gasket kit is a MLS gasket!
