Instrument cluster issue Topic is solved

I've tried to install a xenon kit in april with a buddy. Everything was allright, but at the end, i've lost the fuel gauje bulb on the instrument cluster.

I came back to originals bulbs at the end because ours cars are not made to support this kind of technical stuff.

I've found another cluster instrument. My son, who has better eyes than mine, has made the change of the mainboard from the second cluster instrument i bought. I get back the fuel gauje light, but the needle moves only when i cut off the ignition... Does the car needs to drive a little to get this thing in order ? I've lost the "kms to zero" also onthe the OBD.

Which reference do we have to take on the cluster instrument to be sure to find the right one ?

Electric/electronics in cars are beyond my paygrade! However, the fuel senders in older cars used a ballast resistor to control the feed back of the bouncing level sensor. It may be that it is not sensing correctly. Make sure the pins in the master wiring connector to the cluster are not bent or pushed out.

Other than that I have nothing to add, sorry.

Hy Neil,

Thanks so much for your mind. Pins are not hurts. I will try to spray contact spray to see what happen. If i have to choose, i will stay with no light on the fuel level rather than no fuel level at hall. I would like to tempt another instrument cluster, but these parts are "expensive", and old aged too...

So, I've tested components of the instrument board : the ones signaled by a red shape are out, there's no continuity. I don't know how to identify these parts. Does someone has the knowledges to help me to find which part i have to order ? I could eventually have a look to the second replacement board my son installed for me by rebuilding the instrument cluster, and see if i manage to de-solder these parts to put them on the original board...

There is a very slim chance you may be able to read any info on the chip under high magnification assuming there is identity on it.

I do think so. I will by another cluster instrument hoping i will get all bulbs in order (fuel- temp gaujes, speed and round/mn).

They look to me like diodes in MELF package. The part number is printed on the parts. Not all components in a circuit are supposed to show continuity. Diodes should show ~0.6 Vf in one direction and high resistance in the other. If your meter's continuity range uses a low voltage then they will show as open circuit. It's possible these parts have failed, but I would not expect them to be high failure rate.

Thank you for these informations. My electronic level is not high enough to allow me to handle this issue. And i haven't got tools, material and trust necessary to start to repair this board. I will find another cluster instrument, more simple to me.

Just adding another observation for future followers of this thread: those two-terminal components circled above have a white bar painted around the bottom of them -- that is an indication of polarity, so the parts are most likely diodes as AEG posted above.

I've found a new cluster instrument that works fine. This issue is solved.
