So, I have attached some pictures below. First is comparing the side exit hole in the oil catch can between older and newer cans. Both seem identical to me. Only difference is that the newer variant (1271988) has a plastic shield on it's front over the older variant (1271650).

Looking at Volvo websites, there is also another variant (9146756). This looks like the older version without the shield on the front. This is listed for 850 NA engines only. 1271988 is listed for Turbo 850's and All V/S/C70's. I can not think of any differences as to why they are different, or even need to be different.

Above is a picture of the 2 parts I have of the 2 part numbers I have listed at the start. Mountings are the same

Above is the older one listed for this car, for 850 NA cars. I cannot find it listed on other sites, only the 9146756 number

Above is the part listed for 850 turbos and all V/S/C70's including NA. These are supplied with the offset/cranked short hose from the side.

Thanks for putting this to bed. The Internet is littered with bad info , isn’t it?

I can contribute this. My T5 came ftom Sweden/Ghent with a short rubber hose connected the lowest port to the engine block with two hose clamps. When I did the first PCV in 2013? I replaced it with the rubber hose metal jacket, still sparking the debate about which end the rubber end touches, block or Pcv box….

Side connector piece is 1271653 and both openings 24+-1 mm

The hose sits out 37 mm from the face, frontward

Left to right, 70mm

The step down is about 10mm +-3mm

Just for completeness, I have added a picture below with both PCV oil catch tanks side-by-side.

I am wondering if the 850 NA motors had the drain from the block at the top side in a different position for some reason to the Turbo engines and the 98- NA's have a lower inlet hose on the side short pipe from the block? Because, if the physical sizes of the tanks and the inlet/outlets are in the same place, why do yo need the side hose with a drop down. This is where the usual Volvo change overs typically fail as they don't seem to have a proper handle on when the changes are actually introduced. From my brother's 97 the pictures clearly show it has the drop down side short hose, but according to Volvo based on engine number and Vin# it should have the straight hose.

Phew! What a cock-up!

Now I will have to wait until my brother decides to venture out when the weather cools a bit north of Denver.

Oh, and I added the 'old' and 'new' lower drain hose to help show what Abscate is talking about. You can see them above the 2 catch tanks.

The older one had the 2 pipe clamps, and the newer one has a solid steel collar. I have always fitted these with the 'rubber end' to the block as it is not quite flat and the metal would scratch the block metal. Who cares about the plastic on the catch tank!?

Differences in that small side hose, and the oil traps (and upper hose) that go with them, are all documented on the last page of this thread form 2014: viewtopic.php?t=61703&hilit=1271771&start=30

An alternative to NLA hoses is to learn how to preform your own hoses. Preforming hoses involves Spring type tube benders, Zip ties, Wire Templates, Boiling water, Ice water.

There are lots of tutors on how to do this. Google "Preform you own hoses"

I read the notes that Erik has written. However, the information he has is different from what the dealers list as the options. I agree with the part numbers although one has now been superseded with a new part number. Also he noted the the 1271650 has the bent arm which in my case looks like it is correct, but Volvo list that trap with the NLA hose which is the straight option. On this Volvo site it lists 3 options for the oil catch tank (one is for the 10V motor). But it only lists the NLA (#3) on the drawing as the hose option for all options of tank.

https://www.volvocarstorontoparts.ca/a/ ... 76252.html

This link also shows 2 options for the catch tank based on engine number for the LPT engines. It shows the kinked hose as the option for the turbo engine.

Something is clearly wrong with the Volvo part numbering system.

Also as I mentioned, as per Abscates parts drawing, I have always fitted the newer style of short bottom drain hose with the rubber towards the block due to the rough nature and slightly sounded surface of the block and not to scrape the paint on the block. Happy it looks like my logic (for once! ) was sound.

Those notes from 2014 were based on my experience with having NA and turbo cars in the driveway at the same time. Then I grabbed the photos from the web to demonstrate.

Volvo parts db is great but at the same time has always been riddled with errors.
