dealership unable to code new key

I am always wary if something is not specific to say it will work with specific brands. There are locksmiths locally to me that claim to be able to program Volvo keys. I also see people selling used P2 key fobs which are pointless as they don't have the correct mechanical key. The main part for me of the key that fails with time first is the transponder chip which is in the end with the physical key in it. To open that to replace the key is 'fun'. It is guaranteed to break the locating tabs as the 2 halves are glued together.

You could buy a clone casing and transfer the guts into it and then have the new blade cut to fit your car.

I seem to recall that Volvo uses the ID48 system.

I don't know if this is a knock off or legit, but good old Ali Express has this for sale:

I bought the Vida Dice unit from Ali Express many years ago and it has worked ok. But then others have had issues with the cloned units.

Not sure about Volvo, but my son had a Saab that had to have a new key married to it. The shop that did it told me that the car could only retain a maximum of 5 unique key codes. Not sure what would happen if you had to add a 6th…..

I have had great support programming Volvo keys from Sergey at https://www.a2zautolocksmith.com/ . He is able to remotely connect to a laptop with VIDA/DICE and program the transponder if you have one key that currently works and also program the remote control function if you have the code that comes with a new key. I have used aftermarket keys off ebay like this on four P2 Volvos: https://ebay.io/m/77oDOD . Finding a locksmith capable of cutting "laser" cut keys was the hardest part.
