This business of staking the cup at factory (to hold the Tripod in place) is interesting...
- The 2006 and 2007 S60 cars that I have: impossible to remove the Tripod bc the stakes are a bit too tall (maybe ~ 1 mm).
So I had to undo the Outer CV joint to replace the boots.
Of course, I used GKN boots.
- The 2006 BMW X5 3.0i: the Tripod comes right out bc the stakes were not very tall (maybe ~ 0.5 mm). This makes the CV boot job much easier.
Same GKN factory, slightly different techniques...

considering there isn't much in the cv joint, some rollers and wheels, why isn't it possible to rebuild them.?

Because GKN does not sell individual components such as rollers, needle bearings etc. also, as components wear, they may require different rollers? That is normal wear.
By the time dirt, debris, small sand particle enter the CV joint, the damage to the housing (Outer and Inner side cup) dictates whole axle replacement.
They only sell whole axle, if offered.
I have never replaced an axle bc I always replace the rubber boots preventively at ~ 110K or 120K miles.
If the boot is not allowed the crack open, the axle lasts "forever", all the way to 300K miles.
