when I go to the junkyard for parts, it is often obvious why a car was scrapped. However, the car mentioned above was overall in good shape with a dent in one rear door. Other than that the car looked clean.

I pulled a pigtail with a connector we needed for the 05 V70 NA we were trying to fix. I decided, based on the price of a CEM, it made sense to buy a junkyard one to keep as a donor for cloning as we have 2 x P2's.

So I pulled the CEM and brought it home. It was only when I compared the part number of the replacement for the V70 NA that I realized that part numbers were different. When I check on Vida parts for both cars it lists the same part number for the CEM? The CEM I pulled has a part number exclusive to 05-14 XC90's? Did someone have a problem and swap the CEM and then junked the car as it did not work?

Original - # 30728542

Part number from junkyard 07 XC70 - # 30786476

Well, I guess I can return the CEM for credit as I won't likely need it.

I had thought about opening it to look at the insides to see where the Headlight relays were and the part number for the relay. However, while it could be the same, there is no certainty. Also, as I am returning it I did not want to damage the case. I did try opening it, but I could not get it to open. If any one can shed light on how to remove the covers, I'd appreciate the guidance!

The hardware is is the same for both. Its the software that makes the difference.
Somebody may of use the XC90 CEM to clone the XC70 CEM.

That was my thoughts, but I know Volvo dealers won't reprogram used ones, and Xemodex would only clone the same actual part number. So there must be someone else out there doing this. Strange also is if the base part is the same, why do Volvo give it different part numbers? If it is only the software is different is makes no sense (when did that stop Volvo!?) to have different part numbers, unless they come with the software already loaded. Volvo part number drawings show SW as part of the drawing.

Anyway, strange.

I will speak to Xemodex again as well. Volvo can't seem to answer the question if the base cores are the same. And, of course we won't know if the car had been running this way.

I have no way to power it up as it is in my garage now unhooked from a car. Good idea, but I don't think the junkyard likes us taking in power packs, saws-alls and disc cutters because of liability issues.

I do occasionally sneak in a small 9V battery and leads to check if a loud speaker works, but that is it.
