What did you do to your P2 Volvo today?

large oetiker band clamp kit arrived for the CV boot clamp I had to cut off, the pliers in the kit are way too small , they probably need cheeter pipes on the handles for leverage but I have a bigger set I use for pex plumbing clamps (oetiker style), they work nicely,
CV joint went back together nicely, along with fresh grease.
Had to take a break to look up the torque for the axle bolt. 24 ft plus 90 degs, seems light but thats it.

Also bought 2 of the wheel guide rods to make wheel mounting easier.

For the rear I cut my own from some Autozone longer blade. Nothing special there.

Well, I got a text from the 05 V70 NA owner today. He had emailed me a copy of the Out-of-Province inspection that had just been completed. Glad to say that we were spot on with the projected issues, and the parts were already on order and due Monday.

They did add one think I missed, a broken muffler mount. Bad on me. I have never had an OOP inspection done so have no idea what is checked, but now I am in a much better knowledge position going forward. So I will have to look at which mount is broken and see what has to be done. The other thing they mentioned, is 'hot spots' on the front rotors. I know what that is but the owner says he has no issues with the brakes. As we have to replace the outer front CV boots we can strip and clean the front brakes while in there.

after installing a new abs ring on the drivers side I still have the abs warning, so I assumed its the sensor, before ordering I checked with vida, I was working on the wrong side. duh.
Do it all again. This time I'll order the sensor and reluctor ring.

Easy to test resistance on the abs sensors. Very accessible plug in the engine bay on fronts. And also rears under seat cushions. I believe its a reading somewhere in the kilohm range.

Made the usual mistake of taking a trip to the local junkyards to see what was there. Not a whole bunch to be honest.

I wanted to go back and look at the 07 XC70 (and now there was a 2nd one there as well) to see if I could figure the power wires for the HU-850 amp unit I pulled. I have the other 2 cables with the round (Din?) plug that runs from the radio to the amp, and also the cable for the speaker wires. I could not figure out the center speaker wires (Are they in the speaker cable harness?).

I tried to follow the power cables. I met an amazing young guy working on one of the XC70's trying to get parts for his 04. He could not figure out haw to remove a gas cap cover from a car without breaking it. I showed him how to do it, but you always lose the locking pins. He said no worries, he will just 3D print new pins! I recall meeting him before when he was pulling an HU-850 amp. He told me the wires run directly to the CEM I think he said. It ried following the cables as I said, but it looks like I would have to pull the whole dash to get into the harness as it looks like they are part of the harness. I looked later at an 06 V70R that had a smashed HU-850 in another yard and hit the same issue.

What I did in both cases was to cut the wires with the plug for the amp end that can be used to work out the other end. Unfortunately, it meant another HU-850 followed me home with the other 2 cables.................

However, while under the dash, 4 servo motors for the the heating system were sitting there shouting at me to be taken home and be saved.

So they were!

It then got too hot to stay so I headed home!

Well had more 'fun' with the 05 V70 NA that looks like it has taken root on my hoist. I managed to fail to re-fit the outer CV joint easily and in the process damage 3/4 of the 'c-clips' that lock the outer cv joint onto the axle. The buggers would not compress into the slot in the axle. I have not had this issue before. I think I now know why!

The NA axles it turns out have a skinny round wire clip, where the turbo has a flattened and wider clip. Strangely the GKN kits for the outer have the correct clip. I ordered 2 more clips (at a stupid $35 from the local dealer EACH!). They arrived today and they are the wider flat ones. Turns out this is the only one listed?? They are now trying to find the correct ones.

Only way to get new clips is to buy more GKN outer boot kits from Rock Auto. 2 kits are $65 CDN shipped all taxes!

They won't get here until early next week.

I will post more info with part numbers as many sites listed claim that the outer boot kits are correct for late P80's and P2's. This is wrong for both the outer and inner. I had bought a pair of boots kits with inner and outer boots in the kit from a local supplier on clearance. The are Meyle. They are completely wrong. Inner is for the turbo CV boot and outer I have no idea what it is for.

This is the c-clips Volvo got for me. If you look closely they are almost square section.

Strange thing is they sell outer boot kits that have 2 slips in them?

I'm not sure even this kit is the correct one as the GKN cross reference for the car that works lists Volvo part numbers 272441/2.

However if you then try to check this on their systems this is not specific to what the Volvo 'new' part number kit is.

On a separate front, a 'simple' license plate bulb swap naturally escalated quickly. Bulb has actually exploded, melted the lens casing and broken both tabs off the locking part of the bulb holder! Now have to swap the whole bulb holder which is part of the wiring loom and the lens housing. That means removing the tailgate panel and removing the whole lighting unit and latch assembly. Fortunately I have a spare new Volvo harness and a lens assembly in the 'stash'.

Simple answer when I went back with fresh eyes. The c-clips I was sold by Volvo are for the trans inner end of the acle on the LHS front. What I needed was the clip for the outer end under the CV joint. Turns out they don't sell that other than in a kit!

Already ordered the GKN kits from Rock Auto.
