Questions on fitting an HU-850 radio and amp - P2 Topic is solved

So, one of my Volvo buddies bought an 06 V70 T5 and on the way home his HU-850 became flakey on the sound front. He ahs been looking for one for about 9-10 months, so I suggested he try and fit a 'temporary' HU-650 I had. As I had no idea if it worked I gave him 2 radios to see if either works.

Naturally I was in the junkyard yesterday and found an 07 XC70 in the yard with a clean looking HU-850 and the amp was also there still.

I pulled them, but I wanted to find out how easy it would be to fit these to a non HU-850 fitted car with say an HU-650.

What I found was that like the P80 SC-900/1 units what have no internal amp, the HU-850 is the same. However I now know you can fit an HU-650 into a car with an HU850 and it works fine with the amp. I'm not sure if the center speaker works, but they use the same amp?

What I also found was that there are 2/3 wires like in the P80's between the amp and up to the radio area.

1) One with a round connector that fits into the outer round input on the radio and this is the same on both HU units and then runs to the amp.
2) The 2nd has a white rectangular connector which runs from the amp up to the speaker wiring connector that goes to the HU-650 and usually plugs into the rear of the radio. Instead it has a female end and you connect that to the male speaker connector and bypass the radio unit completely.
3) The amp has a 3rd connector which looks like a power carrying cable and a couple of others. It runs from the amp out to the inner rocker panel area under the passenger seat. I did not have any more time to check it out fully, but it looks like that is a permanent fixture on the 07 car I was working on.

Does anyone know if that is a fixed option wire that is available under the carpet should you have wanted the HU-850 fitted?

Finally, my buddy seems to think he has read something which says the 06 and 07 HU-850's are different and not interchangeable? Again does anyone know if that is correct?

It may be that in the -06 there is a 3rd wire, but the 07 which had some wiring changes the power wires were integrated into the harness?

I may have to go back to the junkyard with more available time to see. I need to make sure the wiring is integral, and check an 06 P2 to see if the same cables are there or not.

I did mention this elsewhere, my buddy decided just to fit the whole HU-650 and the heater control unit. It all worked. He said he had to play with the buttons on the heater control unit as initially, the controls were not working the same for both sides. After disconnecting the battery and trying again, the control unit is now working fine. So the stuff I have read that you have to have the heater control uit reprogrammed my not be entirely correct.

Early 2007 vehicles did not have an auxiliary input jack inside the center console. Late 2007+ P2 vehicles have an auxiliary input.

The Volvo part numbers are different between the early and late 2007 HU-850 head units.

Ok, I think I have the earlier unit. Based on Volvo parts sites, There does appear to be 2 versions of the HU-850 as DavidE7 mentions. This one did not as best I recall have the aux input, although you can buy one for a stupid amount of money from Volvo.

What I was trying to find is if there was a '3rd' wire from the amp to the head unit. It looks like there may be, but it is no longer listed as a part number as it was a 'kit' with all the wires. Looks like another run to the junkyard may be in the offing. I say removed another connector from the amp and the radio, but it looked like it was part of the harness as it ran a different route. Maybe it was just tapes to the other cable harness for the car and ran up under the passenger footwell and up to the head unit.

I'm still curious why there is a software listed for the radio? Is it to allow the use of the steering wheel controls or something else?

#4 and #5 in the drawing show the different fronts. #4 has buttons above the right hand end of the CD slot. The other version (#5) does not have this.

So the picture above is 2/3 of the cable connections for the amp to HU-850. I need to find the 3rd one.

My buddy was able to connect the HU-650 unit I loaned him to the amp using the HU-850 wires to the amp and it worked. I need to remember to ask if it works with his steering wheel controls without programming.

DavidE7, can you confirm if you can identify if this is the 'old' or 'new' HU-850 as you mentioned above please?

Hello, The date code on the receiver is under the barcode at the top left of the label: 0605 which is 2006 May. I will need to open the Ti S60 to check part numbers for the early receiver that works in that car. My son has the Magic Blue S60 with the late receiver.

Here is the tag from a late 2007 model year HU-850 that has the center console auxilary input connection.

As you will see, the date code is 0702 which is 2007 February. The part number is 31215631-1.

For ease of future search engine results, the early HU-850 without the center console auxilary port from the post above is part number 30745802-1.

I looked on eBay for HU-850 and found other date codes and some additional part numbers:

0511 = 2005 November with 30745809-1
this one looks like it was pulled from an S80.

0508 = 2005 August with 30745809-1 for S80.

0603 = 2006 March with 30745813-1 for S60/V70.

0501 = 2005 January with 30737705-1 for an S80.

0409 = 2004 September with 8696127-1 for S60/V70.

0504 = 2004 May with 30737709-1 for S60/V70.

Having a correlation between radio part numbers and vehicle build dates would save a bunch of time for people trying to upgrade their P2 Volvo.

So based on what you have written, this is actually a 2006 unit although fitted to a 2007 XC70. That is I guess good news to a point. It may still be 'corrupted' to a 2007 if it had the software loaded into the 07 car year level (assuming there were any differences).

OK. I'll look at keeping them, but only if I can find the necessary missing power cable.

The manufacture dates for the radio and model year of the Volvo are not 1 to 1. The model year change for vehicles is different in Europe compared to North America. North America typically changes model years in the middle of summer. Many European countries follow the calendar year for model year. That is the reason why an early 2007 model year vehicle in North America can be a 2006 model year in England or Sweden.

It is best to compare the car manufacturing/build date on the left rear B-pillar tag to the date code on the radio. If the radio date code is one or two months before the vehicle build date, there is higher likelihood for compatibility.

In the UK, as per NA the 'new' model year is the start of August. Not sure about the rest of Europe.

I'm hoping to maybe get to the junkyard on Saturday if the weather improves. It has been some reasonably heavy rain here so junkyards will be swamps. If I find anything else I will update.
