S80 D5 '06 290k km: 0W-30 or thicker?

Hi everyone,

I'm about to do my second oil change on my 2006 S80 (P3 generation, 2.4 D5, 185 hp, D5244T4, VIN: YV1AS714071001579) which currently has 290,000 km (29,000 mil) on the clock. The DPF and EGR are fully intact and I want to keep the system healthy.

Currently, the engine runs on Motul 8100 Eco-nergy 0W-30 (Volvo VCC 95200377), but I would like to try something else this time. Oil consumption is minimal (especially for a nearly 20-year-old diesel), and my driving profile is about 75% highway with very little city use.

I've read through several topics and would like to ask for your advice based on practical experience regarding the following:

The factory spec is 0W-30 A5/B5.

However, many suggest that at this high mileage, or due to potential fuel dilution from DPF regenerations, the 0W-30 might provide a lubricating film that is too "thin" for the D5.

Because of this, some owners swear by a thicker, Low SAPS 5W-30 or even 5W-40 oil, strictly keeping a 10-15k km change interval.

What is your real-world experience with these engines? Would you stick to the thinner factory spec at this mileage, or is it better to go with a thicker oil? Which specific brand and viscosity do you recommend?

In Europe....in moderate climate,dealer use 5w30 A5/B5.
