Thanks for the suggestions, David. Yes, I used the Volvo specific tool for locking the camshafts. Timing marks line up with the cover notches. Torqued the center bolts to spec. Will work on checking the relative pulley to camshaft position.

I have not come across this myself yet, but do the cam variator units go bad? If they do what affect do they have? I would have expected the timing not to respond correctly even if the CVVT solenoids are working and the cam position sensor are working as they should.

I actually just replaced the exhaust cam hub the other day, though I haven't yet had time to reassemble and test start. There was a lot of play in the hub (not rotational, but in line with the shaft) even with everything torqued and the cams locked down. I'm thinking that might be the source of the P0017 code. Fingers crossed...

I am thinking this may be the issue with an 02 XC70 that I chased the issue on and never got the chance to complete. Car has done in excess of 40kkm since I saw it last. I think that wither the hub is bad or whoever fitted the belt got it a tooth out. Car has about 260k miles on it.

I have rarely seen the cam hubs code, but they do get loud sometimes - not sure where the noise comes from.scot850 wrote: 31 Aug 2026, 19:33 I have not come across this myself yet, but do the cam variator units go bad?
