My full sympathy!
I have a leak like that in my 96 base, too. Some evidence that it's the seal around the windshield. Seems like it's coming down the firewall, left side of the foot well. The base is parked for now while I make a couple of other repairs, but I spoke with a reputable, long term local body shop owner who offered to take a look at it with some confidence that the leak can be located and possibly sealed from the outside. To do that, I suppose the trim strip running the length of the roof and down alongside the windshield will need to be removed.

I'm still getting water in, and more of the sloshing sound behind the dash, driver's side. Not sure where it's all coming from, but I wonder if it's the fusebox. Is there a seal around it?

Years ago, I found standing water in my 93 850 driver's side foot well. It was after a hard rain the night before. I couldn't figure out how it got inside, but I too thought it might have overflowed the dam around the fuse box which would open a clear path to the inside.
I still have the car and it lives outside. That has never happened again—to that one.
As I wrote elsewhere, I now have a leak in my 96 850 base that does put water in the d.s. foot well. The path in is a mystery, but it seems to be coming in around the upper left side of the firewall, so others have suggested a leaky windshield. I'm going to take it to a local reputable body shop where the owner said there might be a way to seal it. We'll do a hose test on a dry day and track it from the inside.
