Pulled the headliner from the junkyard and also took out the dashboard to the easily pick out the cabin sensor, heater fan, resistor and heater flap

I always wonder about these yards with stacked cars. What if someone needs the roof or the roof sheet metal and it’s all dented in?

On the other hand, the demand for roof sheet metal on a 20 yr old car is pretty tiny!

I worked on a 500+ kkm 850 10 valve. It sounded like a bag of bolts when I started it after sitting for 6 months. Took it for a run with the owner and about 1km down the road the engine suddenly went quiet and ran really sweet. After that the car just purred. Amazing!

I didn’t start mine for quite a while and I had rattly valves for a while. I wonder if that’s the lifters bleeding down over time.

Per Volvo keep rpm under 3000 rpm until the lifters pump up.

Yup, take it for a good drive and get the revs up. These lifters will bleed down and sound like hell after sitting for a while.

That's what I'm hoping. I've got several things to fix before I really get it on the road much.

Well, the 'boss' came in a couple of days ago to ask me what 'this small piece of plastic is?' Apparently it fell into her hand when she was parking the car in a parking lot.

One look and immediately I realized what it was. If you have an automatic trans P80 you will likely have had this happen to you too.

That said bit of plastic is part of the hinge on the bottom of the gear shift button. This piece was a sizeable chunk from one end. She said the car still seemed to be driving ok. I have been busy on other people's project cars so today was the first time to look at it, but she was away. I decided to try to find my stash of repair buttons (have you seen the stupid price of those now aftermarket!!).

Inventory system worked and I found the box with 5 new buttons and about 8 gear knobs. 5 wood, 2 black and one grey. If anyone needs one let me know. They all either have new aftermarket buttons or really good originals.

Some had not been repaired as they has been stored when I had no new buttons, so I took the opportunity to remind myself using the useless IPD instructions with blurry unhelpful pictures, and Robert's DIY video. Not one of his best but it did help me more than the instructions from IPD.

3 of the units needed new buttons so decided to tackle then first and then hopefully the car would be back to do that one too.

Took a little finagling initially, then I recalled that the bottom pin is too long by about 1mm for these aftermarket units and I grind them down from 25mm to 24mm and then round the end. Leaving them full length you may be able to force them on, but they then stress the end caps, and that is what had broken off on all of them.

First one took maybe 5 mins of faffing around to figure out the hair spring fitment and then it was fairly easy after that. 3 done in probably less than 30 mins including the pin grind and filing.

Then the PITA R returned and decided to tackle that straight away. Gear shift came off easily and then the fight as with everything on this car. This has a leather gear knob grip. This makes everything harder to work on as the gaps a tighter. Eventually done, and went to fit it.
Again, naturally being this car it was not straight forward. There is a plastic retainer under the leather boot that need to be rotated 40 degrees or so to release the boot from the bottom of the gear knob. The damn thing was broken! To replace this requires pulling the whole center console out, or it should. I was not going to do that, so, managed to get the broken ring out to find a chunk was missing. How??

Fortunately I recalled having a spare for some reason so found it and using a small blunt flat blade screw driver was able to persuade it into the boot and then refit the gear knob and lock the boot in place.
