Got a call from the 'boss' this afternoon. On her way home from golfing, the PITA 'R' just died on her. She called the AMA (AAA equivalent) and they turned up pretty quickly. The service member diagnosed that he felt the car was out of fuel. Strange as the car showed it had 20 liters in the tank. They added 5 liters of fuel and the car started up and ran. My wife went and filled the car but it only took 50 liters and then had the 5 liters the AMA guy put in. The car takes around 70-75 liters so it looks like the fuel gauge is correct.

It looks to me like it might be the ejector is not transferring fuel for some reason. Time to get the matches out and find a piece of bare land somewhere as I am not taking the tank out again. The car had a new pump and ejector, all new fuel lines which has the fuel pressure valve in it replaced about 10 years and maybe 5000 miles ago. Now lack of use is more likely the issue, but as to what is causing the issue. I will check if there are any codes but running out of fuel doesn't usually throw one. There was only one hose that I did not replace back then on the top of the tank which was not available even back then. It is 2 different diameters at each end (tapered). If that is the issue then the whole back end and tank have to come out. Time to fire up the camera an a cable and have a look for leaks.

Replaced the failing control arm in under 20min, I dont like how good I'm getting at it, too much practice

Bought a F.A.G control arm, it has a transparent balljoint cover, never seen that before

Oh, good grief.

The funny shaped hoses are all evap hoses, not fuel delivery hoses , so that won’t be the problem.

Could it be possible to detect the ejector transfer by feeling the crossover pipe with the fuel pump on?

Possibly. It clearly was able to transfer maybe 10-15 liters wither through 'slosh' over the top to the other side, or the ejector.

I think first thing is to check fuel pressure, not because of the pump, but see if there is a leak down of pressure (leak) or if the pressure is some how compromised getting to the LHS of the pump. When I did the rear end rebuild it included brand new fuel pipes and the fuel pressure valve, cross over pipes.

Thinking about what you said, if there was an EVAP issue, I would expect a P0440 /455 code. I was thinking more along the lines of not being able to build enough fuel return pressure to allow the transfer 'pump/valve' to do it's work. Fuel level sensors seem to be ok, and otherwise the car starts ad runs normally.

Now, were is that lighter...................

A fuel pressure measurement tells all.

FRom memory, the excess bleed from the FPR that sits on top of the AWD tank goes over to the ejector on the LHS, picks up fuel, and delivers it across the front of the tank to the RHS

If you have 50 psi at the rail you should be good , except for the edge case where the pump is dying, and only putting out 50 psi , with no flow to the ejector

I hope it is not the pump as it has maybe only done 5k miles and is one of the last Volvo OE pumps left at the time. Not using the car enough could be the bigger issue here, but the boss says we should sell one of our 3 cars and use it all year round and not put it away for the winter.
Now I just need to get enthusiasm to look at a car I hate working on.
