home made high octane

I found another fourm that had a formula for making 92 octane in to 98/99 octane by adding Xylene or Toluene avalable at paint supply stores. they said Home Depot no longer carried it but Lowel's did.
11 gal. of 92 + 3 gal. xylene = 98/99 .
i'm going to look in to this more before i try it in my car. have any of you heard of this. i look foward to hear from you.

Toluene is some seriously nasty stuff:

Toluene reacts as a normal aromatic hydrocarbon towards electrophilic aromatic substitution.[3][4][5] The methyl group makes it around 25 times more reactive than benzene in such reactions. It undergoes smooth sulfonation to give p-toluenesulfonic acid, and chlorination by Cl2 in the presence of FeCl3 to give ortho and para isomers of chlorotoluene. It undergoes nitration to give ortho and para nitrotoluene isomers, but if heated it can give dinitrotoluene and ultimately the explosive trinitrotoluene (TNT).

Toluene can be used as an octane booster in gasoline fuels used in internal combustion engines. Toluene at 86% by volume fueled all the turbo Formula 1 teams in the 1980s.

For best results: wash in cold water separately, hang dry and iron with warm iron. For not so good results: drag behind car through puddles, blow-dry on roofrack.

nice reply, im gunna have to take a chemistry class to under stand it compleatly.
the ecu upgrade from Rica calls for a 98 octane. i havent checked the current price for the local 100 octane but i know it isn't praticial for even for a weekend car.

Don't panic. Toluene is not all that bad. It's an ingredient (in some cases the main ingredient) in brake cleaner. With an LD50 (lethal dose to 50% of the exposed population) of over 1 gm/kg, you'd have to ingest a whole lot of the stuff to kill yourself.

i use it at work and its terrible for you so dont inhale too much and dont get it on you. our msds states instant death directly on the bottle! we use it to "break up" sealant used in aircraft for the us navy.
