OFF won't clear after 4.5 hours

Post by mizclark06 »

Hi,

I own a 1997 960 (beauty) but I can't seem to unlock the radio.

I have pulled the fuse, completely disconnected it....(interrupted the power supply in several ways but it only sets off the alarm)

Left in the I position (unit on) overnight and then again for 4.5 hours today. Is there anything else I can try?

I bought this car with the salvage title...body shop thought they could use codes from other Volvos. I have the correct code but no way to enter it. It displays OFF or blank screen when on, spits CDs back out... antenna comes up when I turn it off goes back down when I turn it on. :?:

Would there be anything I am missing that would stop it from resetting?

The owner's manual says the radio will lock for 2 hours. However, I have heard of the 960 radio locking for as much as 24 hours.

Is it safe for you to leave it that long with the keys in?

Since I got a private message, I was going to post, but Bill has beat me to it...try leaving it for longer. You might try this in your garage with a trickle charger on the battery just in case this procedure seems to run your battery down.

Aw hell!

No I live in an apartment....no garage. Mother in law owns a body shop though. I guess when business lets up I could leave it plugged to the charger in the bay for a few days. Fell asleep waiting the other night so I know 12 hours isn't even long enough. Not taking that chance again

What if I disconnect the battery for 2 hours and then follow the manuel again? Beginning to miss the 850....only needed to unplug battery to reset!

Apparently that would not work.

A Volvo tech friend tells me this is a major problem with the 960 and no-one can explain why.

I also have a 1997 960 and the radio locked up after my battery died. If you enter the wrong code more than 3 times, the radio will lock up for 24 hours!
My dealer went off the VIN number to get the code, but my car had a radio upgrade so the code was wrong. They had to pull the radio out (a very simple procedure) and get the code from the serial number on the back of the radio.

I don't think the ignition has to be on for 24 hours, the radio just needs to be plugged in for 24 hours and you will get 3 more chances to enter the code!

The ignition key has to be set to position 1 and the radio switched on whilst it resets.

Hey thanks a lot guys. I took the remote off the key ring and set the alarm while its resetting. MIL's crew just finished a repaint and buff..so it's getting a lot of attention!

Will check it tmw afternoon. PLEASE let me know if that will interfere with the sequence.
