I just looked at IPD site again and the latest Scan Gauge they are selling still has the feature:

"Make and store up to 10 rewritable special codes
to send to the vehicle computer "

I just want to know where to find the "SPECIAL CODES"

I too am looking for the "tool". I found the scanguage II on IPD and verified it will not reset the '98 with IPD customer service. I'm under the understanding that the '98 does not use a fully compliant ODB II protocol. That's why typical reset'ers won't reset the light. I see a Draper on fleabay for $47 from the UK. I've read they work somewhere and for $47 that's not a huge investment. Especially if your being charged by the shop for a reset. To try and figure out the code would require a protocol analyzer. I suppose first you would need to find which pin on the ODB connector the reset needed to be sent down and if any other pins needed to be pulled high to accept the command. If it uses normal TTL levels a RS232 breakout box could be adapted in to figure this info out. My mind is whirling so I ramble...

I wanted to let everyone know that my 96 850 Turbo Wagon's perpetually annoying Service light, that the dealer charges to reset........will reset using the SIR V 2000, an item I just bought from FCP Groton for $169. Yes a lot of money, but I don't have to grovel with the dealer for help.

Unfortunately, the 98 and only the 98 is unique and has to be done by the dealer or a special reset tool.

What I want to find out, is what the code sequence this special tool uses to reset the light and whether this sequence can be programmed into the IPD Scan Tool....

Someone experimented with this sometime ago and Bill found and posted this diagram up.

If you look around (search) MVS, you will probably find some other information about making your own scan tool. What you get is the diagnostic box functionality that is under the hood for earlier model year Volvo's....this was taken so far, however, no one was able to read all of the codes or reset the service light. Have at it and see if you can figure this out- if you do, you're gonna be popular here!

I don't know how to paste prior posts, but I am pretty sure the 96 and maybe 97 have to be reset by the dealer. I know for a fact my car (96 Turbo Wagon) has to be reset by the dealer. I have gone through this before on forum's which is why I bought the tool. If the 96 can be reset another way, I would like to know about it...

No doubt! I laughed to myself when the light went out about 15 seconds after I hooked up to the OBDII. In fact, it makes me so happy I feel like going around to other 96 850 owners to ask if they need their service lights reset!

I can confirm this. 96-98 cars require the special tool. I have one at the shop, I believe it's made my AST but I'm not sure. Probably similar to one sold by IPD, you just plug it in and wait about 10 seconds. These cars also differ from the 99+ cars in the communications protocol, 96-98 are supposed to use the volvo scan tool for diagnostics, while 99+ use the VCT & VADIS.

I think the 96-98 cars are kindof a hybred, as OBDII compliance was required in 96, but it was probably already planned to go to the CAN bus system used on the 99+ cars, so there was no real reason to invest too heavily in a short term setup. (this is a guess, but logical to me at least) I have heard that the requirement for a special service light reset tool was based on the typical proprietary "make the customer come back to the dealer" philosophy, but that there was sufficient opposition that they went back to a simple reset procedure with the 99+ cars. I don't have a good source for that info though.

That's what I figured; I just wanted to make sure the guy with the 98 wagon knew that his car and only his car wasn't the only year getting the shaft with the service reset light.
