Warm start problems on 850

Post by sallybeer »

I have a low mileage (60,000) 1995 Volvo 850 which for the past year has intermittently (1-3 times a month) failed to start when the engine was warm. The engine turns over but fails to start. If left for an hour or so it will then usually start. Problem appears to be worse when wet but that may just be a coincidence.

A Volvo garage has failed to detect a problem with the car as no error codes are stored and the car typically will not exhibit the problem on the occasions I have left it with them.

I have recently replaced the ignition coil, spark plug leads, fuel ignition relay with no improvement. The spark plugs are fairly new.

One mechanic suggested it could be the ignition switch - overheating. Anybody got any ideas.

Check A2 diagnostic block again for DTC code 314.

Could be faulty cam position sensor (CMP) - especially if issue with restarting engine after starting and running normally from cold start.

My 850 had the same problem, but had a code 3-1-4.

I use to have the same problem on our old Benz. It turned out to be "weeping injectors", ie when you turned off the engine, the gasoline left in the lines would drain through the injector(s) and consequently "flood" the engine. After a period of time, a flooded engine desipates the excess fuel in each cylinder. Hope this helps.
