Something like this? That doesn't seem too expensive. Is that the best alternative to a Haynes/Chilton manual? (VADIS?)

Yes, those others really are not very good at all.
VADIS is still by far the best unless you have VIDA (Volvo's newest) but it's still in use by Volvo and price is prohibitive.

The heated seat controller module is plugged into, but separate from, the PSM. Replacing the PSM will require a reload (i.e. downloading of software), but installing the heated seat controller (p/n 9442947 on your vehicle) does not require software downloading, that module isn't tied into the CAN network directly, but rather controlled by the PSM (hence the need to install the "seatheater appl" when you're finished).
Well, THAT was a 'no duh' moment! The seat heater controller is indeed controlled by the CCM and not the PSM. I just checked the wiring diagrams. I suppose I was confused since the "seatheater appl" is listed right below PSM reload, and not in the CCM section of VIDA.

So, any idea what that means with regards to getting a used module? Will it work? Will it not work?

Shouldn't affect it one way or the other--the modules don't have to be programed, as they're not on the CAN bus (they use LIN/K-Line interconnects to communicate with the CCM). When replacing the CCM as an assembly, VIDA makes no distinction except for transferring the buttons (i.e. it's the same part number)--it's the software that makes it work.
