Volvo finally Makes the ETM Software an Official Recall Item

Post by MadeInJapan »

This was announced this morning (heard it on the news). The other Volvo forums around the world are buzzing with the news. Owners of affected Volvo's from '99-'01 and some non-turbo '02 Volvo's will be getting letters in the mail from Volvo sometime in the near future telling them to bring their cars in for a software upgrade on their ETM (this is if you haven't had it done yet). Remember that if you have a chipped ECU or if someone (IPD for instance) has done a software upgrade for it, this will be wiped out, so tread lightly or contact the vendor who did your upgrade for advise.

Here are a couple of documents between Volvo of North America and the National Highway Saftey Administration regarding this new Recall:

Here is also an on-line news announcement regarding the recall:

The software upgrade will only make the ETM last a little longer!

The problem is a hardware issue, no matter how super duper the software is it will still fail.

Volvo should replace the part period, rather than triyng to mask the problem.

there are so many cars just running out of the 10 year window. volvo is still getting off real easy since many of the cars affected are only 0-2 years from the 10 year mark. and this is were murphy's law will effect many etm related cars, it will fail 1-10 days after the 10 year service date! and they are just putting a new POS etm back in that will be the same failure in a few years.

I don't know if you realized it but you responded to a thread that is over 2 years old. I read what you wrote in the other thread concerning the non-contacting ETM. Yes, let's hope that Volvo will listen (but I really doubt they will).

Did you ever figure out what was troubling your volvo? I have a 1999 T6 S80 with the same codes.

P1171 Bank 1
P1174 Bank 1
P0171 Bank 1

I was hoping I could deduce what is troubling my baby. She had a bad CVVT, I replaced it along with all 6 coils and new plugs. Then she ran great for 3 weeks.

Then, misfiring again and stuttering, smells awful out the exhaust and gas mileage plummeted. I cleaned the MAF, but didn't notice much of a difference.

Let me know if you have any ideas for me or if you solved your problem.

Thanks.
