1995 960 Fumes coming out of vent and acceleration?

Post by Krisfulc »

Ok I have a 1995 960 4 door...but alas no turbo.

I love this car and will pay it off finally in January, now it just has to keep working for me. Here are my two problems:

This does not happen every time I start the car but sometimes, mostly in the mornings if I haven't driven it in a couple hours, gas fumes come out of the AC vents. The smell goes away after a while but there are times it is really strong and i have to open the window and turn off the heat. :?

Second, If i have just slowed down and I go to accelerate and my rpms are about 1500 to 1700, my car will skip or hesitate and I have to push on the gas peddle more to get the rpm's up to about 2000 and it will accelerate fine. This is the only time I have a problem. Any ideas?

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
but alas no turbo.
No 960 has a turbo. If you are in the US you will have the B6304 engine you shouldn't need one. Some 960s are under powered as they have the B6244 or B6254 engines, still with no turbo.

The '95 has the On Board Diagnostic unit in the engine compartment. Run a check for fault codes for the engine problem.

The gas fumes would suggest that you may have a small leak somewhere and the fumes are building up overnight. Check all the visible fuel lines.

Here is a little test....put the ventilation system into recirculation BEFORE you start the car. This way the ventilation system will not draw fumes into the cabin. If you have no fumes when you start it, then look at that little U-shaped (about 2" long) vacuum hose that runs from the intake to a white plastic line which comes up from below the engine on the drivers side. I had the same problem and found the problem to be that hose...it had developed a leak. I am not certain where that vacuum line ultimately goes, but it solved the problem.

I have a 1997 960 wagon, I had the same thing happen. I opened the hood and at the front of the fuel rail gas was leaking. I used some 150 grit sand paper and sanded the area, then cleaned the front of the rail really well to remove any oil. greas. Then I sealed it with JB Weld let it cure for 24 hours and no problems since mid December. Now, the question is how long wil it last. Hope this helps
