2004 xc70 cem failure?

Post by peeces »

Help! 2004 xc70 58k and 98% of the time runs perfectly...except on one section of hwy about 2.5 hours into a 5 hour highway drive. This same section of highway in the opposite direction has never reproduced the failure. But this failure (cem) occured 3 times within 20 miles of the other failures and never occurs at any other time anywere else! Highway speed 65 mph a jolt is felt in the driveline quickly and some nonsence error messege...usually "left door ajar", interior lts come on. and of course the red triangle... this may happen two-four times and finally the cem shuts down. No gauge cluster some accessorys go away, no high-beams, etc...limp home mode... usually, stop, restart car and all that remains is trouble codes about the power loss that the cem failure produced. Cem will not communicate without power down or in one case a hard reboot...battery disconnect. Once the cem comes back and codes are cleared all is good...for almost one year....until driving back on the return trip home on that same section of road and sure enough almost made it through the town were it happened the 2 other times and bamm, the drive line jolt and the cem eventually goes down again. The second time the dealer said "internal cem failure" went out to the car after the diagnosis and everything fine. That was about a year ago until I went across the state again to visit family. This car has never even had a hick-up in the last 10,000 miles except on this small section of highway (all three times occured within about 20 miles of the other failures on the 5 hour highway trip) all while cruising on this hwy with the cruise on about 65mph.??????? What the ????

Welcome to MVS.
As you may know, our Volvo's are very sensitive to extra terrestrials. I'm thinking that this small town has been "visited" and your car's CEM is picking up on the electromagnetic waves that permeate from the alien residents there.

Nah! In all honesty, I really don't know what is going on- I had never heard of any such thing until I did a google search and found this: http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0fcb01/0 I'm thinking (correct me if I'm wrong) that typically you don't drive your XC70 as far as you do on trips and this town just happens to be at about the driving distance that this phenomena occurs with your car. In other words, if you were to drive it to any other location and go about the same number of miles (or hours) that this could happen to you again. I don't know. In the meantime, maybe you can glean something from the link that I posted that makes sense to you and hopefully you can get whatever it is that's wrong with your Volvo fixed.
Keep us updated, please!
