Message center says "Tailgate Open" but it's not.

Post by sonnyny »

Hi, i just picked up a 01' V70 XC w 99k on it. I buy and sell lots of cars for extra cash and do most of my own repairs. The message center on the dash reads "tailgate open" but I'm sure it's closed all the way. I lifted the tailgate to look for a switch that would activate the dome light and send the signal to the message center but can't find one. I'm assuming it's part of the latch, inside of it. It is not visible from the outside. I made sure that the latch opens and closes freely without any restriction while the tailgate is open, when closing the latch all the way the message still reads open.
Anybody know what to do? Am I right assuming that the switch or sensor is part of the latch or is it somewhere else?
Thanks!

I am also having this same problem on a 2001 V70 XC. Anyone find a solution?

Welcome to MVS, stevenjn2
I suspect one of two things is happening here...the sensor for the lock is actually in the door but the striker plate could be out of alignment...this is adjusted by loosening 2 screws on the outer floor section. Otherwise, the earlier wagons would get wires breaking or chafing from bending from opening and closing the back door so often. It would require taking off the back door's covering to reveal the wiring in the hinge. This is accomplished by opening the back gate all the way and undoing 2 screws on the bottom and 2 screws on the sides...they are readily visible.
Good luck and let us know what you find.

I was also getting this message with the tailgate fully shut. It turned out to be broken wires near the left hinge of the tailgate wiring harness. One of the wires broken was the tailgate lock wire and it's grounded through a switch in the lock when the tailgate is shut. The broken wire creates an open so you'll get the tailgate open message. It can be an intermittent type problem too. This open tailgate wire would also cause my alarm to go off randomly.

You may also have problems with the rear wiper or license plate lights or the tailgate locking if other wires are broken.

I don''t have picture of the wires in my car but this picture looks a lot like was I saw.
