volvo won't start

Post by ttayw »

I own a 89 240 sedan 150,000 on it. A few days ago it died and wouldn't restart. Checked the timing belt looked ok. Checked for a spark at the coil found none; so I changed the coil. Still no spark. While I was working on the car, suddenly I got a spark at the coil. The car started ran for a while, but when I turned it off it wouldn't start again. Any ideas? Thanks Mike

There is a good chance it is either the Hall effects sensor in the distributor or the ignition amplifier. Even though this info is for 700's it is still relevant http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/

hey i have a 1987 volvo 740 and it had the same problm, and my volvo mechanic said it was a ignition control module or something, on my car it was located in the drivers side fender by the air box, it will have a bid 1/2 inch thick wire harness that is attached to it, you have to take out the air box and then youo need to squeeze a piece or metal wire and pull to release the harness, then to module is held on with 2 screws, then it should come right off, i think they are about $150 but i got mine at a foriegn automotive junkyard for $20 and it worked fine, it should take you about 10 minutes to take it out and replace it.

:D Hey you are wonderful. My mechanic told me the same thing it was my ignition control module. He also told me that it was 179.99 new. He also told me that he called all around town and coulnd'nt find one used and that it was going to cost me 250.00 for him to repair my volvo. So did some checking on my own and was able to find one. So I will do myself thanks to you. I was misdiagosnosed by 3 or 4 different mechanics I was about to throw in the towel and I was blessed by your help. Thx again. By the way would you happen to the part number of that ignition control module?

The price level for the origin module seems to be the same in Europe, but a manufacter named Huco is selling a copy called 138002 for less than 50%. Maybe not the same quality, but the origin was not good. Look for that Huco at internet!

Sorry, I have to correct myself. Volvo changed module in 1987. The B230F engine is using a Bosch module type 0227 100 124, that can be replaced by a Huco type 138003
