Mass air flow... read out

1991 240SE Wagon Lately it is having problems about loseing power at the worst moments, like merging with traffic flow. The computer said mass air something or other. So i pulled out one crusty looking tubeular item with a butterfly vent that seems to have collected vaporised oil deposits and is not cleaning up that good. So out to the spare engine I went and grabbed the similar unit now the car does not wish to start as well as it was but once warmed up runs so so...Help or Hints thanks

Can you remember the code that was stored? Did you erase the code when you changed the unit?

Try disconnecting the MAF sensor plug and see if the engine starts any easier.
