Hello. My 2000 V70 (base, manual) gives an occasional loud snap when driving, seemingly from the base of the windshield. It happens sometimes when I hit potholes, and less often when the body is torqued (ie: parking deck 90 degree turn on an incline).
The snap sounds like a rock hitting the windshield, so it startles me every time. I hear it from either the left or right side of the car.
I've had this problem with another car and the mechanic said it was a motor mount, replaced that, and I never heard it again. Could it be that, or some other worn part traveling too far, or even a cracked weld?
Thanks for any insights.

I have an 850 wagon, same thing happens to me, but only in the bitter cold. No engine mount problems and it goes away with the cold weather, so I never really worried about. Not that any of this helps you out too much, but I thought I'd give my 2 cents.
My 850 does the same thing. You describe it exactly too. It always startles me and you would swear a rock just chipped the windshield. I assumed it was something wrong with the dash and how it is mounted. I have all new motor mounts 500 miles ago so I don't think it is that in my case. I had a similar problem with a new Toyota it just wasn't so load. The dealer solved it by wedging some shims in somewhere in the dash.

My 850 does the same thing, usually when it's below 15f.
It does scare the hell out of you. It's loud enough to make you look at the windshield to see if it actually cracked.

Mine did the same thing--on very hot days, with the air running full blast, as soon as the cabin cooled from "Sahara" down to "hot as Hades" I'd get that exact noise...a frighteningly loud crack. When I had the evaporator replaced, my shop reinforced the dash mounts and it never happened again.larryh wrote:It could be another broken dash assembly. Very common problem.

Same here, but only occasionally. I haven't found anything to cause it other then temp difference, possible expansion/contraction of parts.

Thanks, you guys are the best!
I checked my notes and this did start in March 2007; the bitter cold. The fact that I constantly forget about it probably means it goes away all summer.
Do you know exactly what needed to be reinforced, so I can point a mechanic in the right direction? I'll address it if I ever need the dash taken out.

I've owned my 2000 V70 for just over a year and a half and just recently, I've been experiencing the same darned thing. In my case, there doesn't seem to be any particular driving condition that causes it, but I have to agree, it scares the hell out of me!!! It's loud enough that I sincerely expect the windshield to crack....or worse....how 'bout EXPLODE! I'm stifled fer sure.
