XC70 2001 5 Codes

Post by brycesheri »

5 codes at one time....HELP
My wife's car had five codes when I checked it:
PO352
PO351
PO300
PO301
PO302
Her car has 173K and I would like to see it make it to 300K.This one has me stumped. This car is totally stock.
I replaced coils on 1&2 cylinders and all five plugs while I was at it. It didn't help at all. Still runs crapy. All updates have been completed through Volvo dealer (Boise, Idaho)
I really thought I knew how to fix this one.
Any ideas?
Confused in Idaho.

You are still getting misfire codes.
Did you reset the codes after you changed out the parts?

I'm suspecting that maybe the cam position sensor has gone bad- the cause of your first codes as well...may have been on the way out...but now it's not getting a signal- this will cause your no-start condition:

It might not be this, but you've seen where I've highlighted #3 (labeled "Sensor"). This is attached right at the rear camshaft seal. If the seal leaks oil and it gets on the sensor, it could cause a malfunction....Your ignition control uses this as a speed sensor and if it is wet with oil or the cable connector to it is corroded, you'll have a no-start condition and even misfire codes if it's getting a partial signal. This is not that hard to take loose to check. Just check it and if this isn't it, we can at least eliminate this from the puzzle.

EDIT: Just for kicks, I searched out your problem on a few other forums...same codes, same problems. Turned out (majority of cases) that it was either a weak battery or grounding straps and battery leads were corroded and needed cleaning and retightening. Just check these as well. If this is all it is, this should be an easy fix for you.

Thanks madeinjapan won't be able to check until later today or early Monday. I guess my wife will be taking my 1998 XC70 to work.

I snuk to my shop and there is no sensor in that location on my car. That is exactly where my upper motor mount is located. Unless its under that mount. I just don't think that cam sensor could be there.

VADIS says it is for your car, and I think it's below your motor mount...as you speculate.

Madeinjapan, You won't belive what I found! After tearing into the cam sensor, it didn't look suspect to me. No oil or anything that looked out of place. I know its electronic and could still be bad. So I did a fuel pressure test and that was also fine. I checked all the wires going to the coils. Nothing broken no brittle wires??? Then I found it- that wiring harness has all the negatives anchored down with a bolt and it was loose. So I tightened the bolt and the car fired on the first try.

Thanks for your input,

Bryce

Good news!! Bryce...could you explain exactly where that wiring harness was that has all of the negatives leads to it bolted down? I suspect that this is a problem on other cars with similar problems (there have been a lot of posts a lot like yours lately).

Right on top of the engine. Next to coil #4 cylinder 4 is a ground wire for all coils and is grounded to the head with a bolt. The bolt was loose. All the ground wires come together and are grounded with one bolt. If any one ground wire were broken from this group of wires you could get a misfire and no start.

Yes, I was aware of that place- just thought there might be a place under things I wasn't aware of- anyway, good news!
