Mystery Idle Problem......

Post by Witts End »

I have a problem that is intermittent. Car is a 2002 V70- NA with automatic.

1. Car acts as if it wants to stall out when simultaneously braking and turning the wheel hard to the right or left (hitting the stops)- like when turning into a parking spot.
2. Car also has tried to stall out slowing from 75 to 20 mph- hard braking- like when coming off an exit ramp.
3. Car acts as if torque converter is not letting when coming to a stop, but not to the point it kills the engine.
4. Mechanic states no stored error codes when plugged in. They replaced steering reservoir, lower engine mounts, and cleaned the throttle body. No help, and bloody expensive.
5. Problem seem worse when outside temp is less than 40F.
6. Everything is stock except for a urethane IPD top engine bushing.
7. At ~86K miles, car runs great otherwise, good power and economy.
8. I had the ETM software update and the throttle body replaced for shift flare.

That's it, love the car but lately want to shoot it.

Can you guys offer any input?

Thanks.....

Welcome to MVS.
What you have certainly sounds like a leak in one of the vacuum lines. Spray a flammable liquid (carb cleaner, etc.) around the smaller hoses while the car is idling and see if the engine surges...if/when it does, you've found your leak.

It maybe a leaky brake booster. It sounds like you only have this problem when you are applying the brakes and there is some other dynamic involved. I would disconnect the hose going to the brake booster, plug the manifold end, and do the step on the brake while turning the steering wheel test again. I believe you will find that it will not want to stall again. Glück!
