V70 1998 Died On Road

This past weekend, the 5 speed non-turbo V70 just stopped running at a traffic light. Had been humming along fine. Brake for light, car stops and dies. Will not restart. Towed away.

Following morning, it started right up. The battery was past its useful life and has since been replaced. Charging system was checked and is fine.

Any idea why the car would just die like this?

You need to get your trouble codes read at an auto parts store and write them down- then post them up here. Hundreds of reasons why your car might die like it did. The codes will help us pin point where the actual problem is.

MAF?

When it stalls next time and won't start, unplug the MAF and if it starts after that you've got a bad MAF.

Or you could go the "easy" way and pull the codes.

Gas mileage also appear to be about 75% of normal. Could it simply be a tankful of bad gas?

Old battery or corroded/bad/loose battery cables.

Battery replaced with new. No recurrence of problem since then.

Next time it quits, check for fuel pressure at the shrader valve at the end of the fuel rail. If there's not a good squirt of fuel (use caution - catch spray in rag), then it's a fuel delivery problem: flaky fuel pump, or fuel pump relay.
