Volvo Repair Database Heat Shield Recall Expired, now Extended Until 2009/12/31

Post by matthew1 »

[edit: title was "Anyone know where recalls are on Volvocars.com?"]

I'm trying to have the local Volvo dealer Rickenbaugh Volvo do a recall procedure...
Your Vehicle
Vehicle: 1997 Volvo 850
VIN: YV1LS5723V2364544
Open Recalls
Recall: S24049
Description: Heatshild attac 850
You can see this page by going here.

and they won't. They say it's not in their computer, and that's that.

The service tech said I can't just look around the web, and I need to go to a proper site and use my VIN number and I said I did.

I told them I got the above information from parent company Ford's web site, and they said it doesn't count unless I go to Volvo themselves. Of course volvocars.com either doesn't have a recall feature, it moved to ford.com, or I can't find it.

The Volvo 800 phone number is offline until tomorrow morning, and I'll call then unless someone here knows the Volvo recall web page.

Matt...you are absolutely right...
You go here: http://www.volvocars.com/us/tools/Owner ... wners.aspx Log in and go to "Your Volvo," and then click on "Care for your Volvo," and then click on "Volvo Service" on your left...that will take you to a new page where you can click on "recalls." However, when you click for recalls it takes you to the Ford site you mention.
The guys at Rickenbaugh Volvo are idiots.
I suppose one thing you could do is "show them" how you got to the Ford site by taking in your laptop, or use theirs, etc.
Good luck and let us know how things go.

Truth is stranger than fiction: recalls can and do expire.

That's what happened, why the recall isn't in the dealer's service computers. Volvo North America phone rep Tracy is asking the dealer today to waive the expiration and do the fuel tank heat shield repair. I'll update this thread with the resolution.

Fumes crept into the cabin the other day, which is why I'm doing this now. Funny how the smell of gasoline will trigger your memory that you've skipped a recall.

I wasn't aware that they expired.

I had a 88 nissan maxima that had a recall on it. The recall was issued in 1994. I had the recall work done in 2008.

So, 14 years after the recall was issued, it was still active.

^^^ That's how it's supposed to happen.

Anyway, the resolution:

The recall expired December 31, 2008. On Monday, VCNA paid for the heat shield work, and it was done quickly at Rickenbaugh. The service manager was apologetic and gracious about the whole thing, stressing that his hands were tied unless VCNA paid for it.

The recall for the gas tank heat shield has been extended -- according to the VCNA rep -- to December 31, 2009.

I had mine done but now I smell gasoline fumes on the right side of the car after driving, is that normal?

Never mind... I called Volvo, ford, Volvo dealership, ford dealership... and all said it does not exist.... Volvo dealership ranted about how the Volvo of north American *which i might add* that pays our bill, their system is not showing this recall, there for you must have the wrong information...

When I spoke to ford- she pulled up the exact information from the ford.com website I was redirected to. and could not supply an explanation as to why it was showing up.

SO just wondering since I failed to get any information on this. Is ford and Volvo a partnership? or does one own the other? Seeing as how they redirected me to ford.com.

BTW! Volvo dealership.. doesn't understand why I was on a Ford site because i should be able to look it up on Volvo's site...
