1996 850 base model - push button start?

Post by audi4000 »

My mother is disabled is unfortunately no longer able to turn the key in the ignition to crank her '96 850.

She can turn the key to accessory position but she cannot apply enough force to turn the key to crank the car.

Is there any way to install some sort of push button or switch to start the car with?

Anyone have any experience with this, or have any tips?
Thanks !

Yes it can be done. Your local alarm and automatic start/ stero shop should be able to help.
If you are doing it on your own I would suggest a security measure such as a hidden coil or remote transponder like the newer cars. This way when she gets in she can flip a switch and press a button and it will only start if the driver has the transponder. The issue will be removing the steering wheel lock. Any handicapped adaptation shop or the electronics store should be able to help.

Good Luck,

Welcome to MVS.
Wow...what a problem and the first I've read anywhere. If the key end were bigger, would she be able to turn it? If so, you might consider modifying the plastic end of the key by adding something to it to make it larger.

Btw, I posted the above at the same time as the poster above me, so I did not know what he posted when I posted my reply...seems like you have a couple of choices.

I'm not disabled but that would be a pretty neat mod to add :).

Thanks so much for the replies everyone.

I did not consider adding something to the key or making something so she'll have more leverage.... That could be the ticket. That would save having to mess with the steering column or any wiring.

Good deal...think about what would be the best bet (on how to modify the key and don't just jump into it trying to glue things to it)- with your model, it would not be difficult to just get a new key too at the dealer...you might even ask them- they might have a key design specifically for disabled drivers...I don't know.

Always something new on this site. I have a 96 turbo, when I got it it had a push button under the dash wired into the starter. I wondered if it meant starting problems, but its never given me any trouble. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was there for. This thread makes a likely reason for it.
