Reverse light / brake light crossing signals

Hi all,

I recently (3 days ago) bought an 05 XC90. I was doing the walk around checking on it and noticed seomthign strange. When you put the brakes on, the rear passenger side reverse light comes on (white light). Whats wierd is that when you put it in reversere, both reverse lights come on as well.

As I am typing this I am thinking that Volvo in their infinite wisdom

set an override so that if a brake light bulb went out, it would have another light go on so you don't get rear ended. Could it be that simple?? And if so wouldnt there me a bulb out message??

Wither way I got to what I thought would remove the tail light housing, but it didn't come off.

Does anyone out there have a repair page in PDF for replacing tail lights, or the wiring diagram for the rear light itself. Or any other ideas.

Well I feel stupid and happy all at the same time.

Thanks MIJ for the diagram, I couldn't find the second bold for removal, it was tucked way up high. The bulbs were put into the wrong holes, and of course, when my wife put it in reverse for me to look at her foot was still on the brake which is what threw me off with the revers light coming on with the brake or reverse. All good now.

What database/manual is that pdf from and where can I get it?

It's from VADIS- the DVD set you can get on eBay. If you decide to get one, make sure they give you the intal key with it. I use it and when I click "Print Topic" I have a program called Win2Pdf set up as a "virtual printer," which converts what's being "printed" to a pdf file. It works very well, as you can see.

$30-40, but Billofdurham says they are cheaper on the UK eBay site...compare both and take shipping into consideration...you'll need about 2Gigs of hard drive space- it covers all Volvo's from the 80's up to model year 2005.
