Wich XC90 is most reliable?

Post by AP »

I'm planning on buying a used XC90 but can’t seem to make up my mind on either the more fuel efficient 2,5T or the T6, or even the V8 model. I'm looking at all models from 2004 to 2006. Which of these would you recommend based on reliability?

The biggest gotcha in used XC90s is transmissions. See the failed XC90 transmission thread.

Stay away from the t6 like Matt said. Now the 3.2L 6 made from the 06 and up model is not the same, and hasn't had problems like the T6. What I like about the 2.5T aside from the fuel economy, is that it is basically the tried and true 5 cyl engine that Volvo has been perfecting since the 850 began. About every other feature on these are identical. So engine and Transmission reliabilty are what you need to consider. I didn't look too much at the V8's before I got mine, but Haven't heard too many horror stories. I don't tow or race and didn't care about AWD so the 2.5 suits me great.
