Fuel Efficiency of XC90 2.5T.... FWD and AWD

Post by AP »

We've owned a number of Volvos over the years. We're interested in buying the XC90 2.5T (not the T6 due to numerous negative reviews), but was wondering if anyone has any information as to what the difference is in fuel efficiency between the FWD and the AWD.

Not a whole lot of difference 2-3 mpg at the most- with the FWD doing better than the AWD.

And for some reason if you get a 03 or 04 it is even closer, if you go to www.fueleconomy.gov you will get the original sticker spec and the new "official" MPG rating of the car. Between the AWD/FWD for 03 and 04 I believe they were both rated 18/24 originally and 17/22 with the new adjusted MPG rating. What's more is users can post their own results and those numbers seem to suggest that there is little or no difference in those years.

For 05/06 I believe the rating is 17/22 for FWD and 17/21 for the AWD. I haven't had mine long enough to say for sure, but I did fill up and drive 150 highway miles and got a little over 24 at 80 MPH on cruise.

Just to update, on my last fill up I averaged 21.33MPG with an average speed of 32MPH (was about 50/50 around town driving/highway) The tank before that I got a 22.5 avg.

That being said, I reset the avg fuel econ and avg MPG with each of the last two fill ups and I have noticed that the computer is telling me about 1.5 MPG lower than actual. So on the 21.33 the computer said I averaged 20 and on the 22.5 computer said my avg was 21.

I think I will compare all a few more fill ups and see if the 1.5 is consistent. I also have a 500 mile road trip coming up so I will do a full just highway calculation.

UPDATE:

Just did a 200 mile round trip last night, mostly highway. on the way down I did not use cruise, was doing 80+ most of the way. On the way back set cruise at 70. My average speed was 54MPH and it included going through a canyon where I go up and down about 1500 Feet.

All that being said, the computer told me my avg MPG was 25.4.

And that was before I did my tune up today, original plugs and fuel filter on 45K miles. I am doing a 350 mile each way trip to Moab next week, plus whatever miles I do in canyonlands/arches NP. I'll post back with results.
