2001 S60 - difficult to put gas into the car

Hi. I have a 2001 Volvo S60 and have a problem with fuel tank. Its very difficult to put gas into the car. I have to barely squeeze the lever and fill it up very slowly or the pump shuts off because the gas comes back up. No check engine light, nothing.
I have some skills, but I dont know much more about gas tanks, than how to replace a fuel pump. .
Help would be very appreciated..

First, the easiest: does it do it if you go to a different gas station? I had this trouble on a 1978 Chevy Monza after I slid into our school bus and put a big dent in it - must have crimped the fuel filler hose. Did you run into a school bus?

. On the serious side, you are dealing with the gasoline filler and you definitely want to get this resolved. You might check for crimps or blockages in any hose leading to the tank, or venting to the charcoal canister. I believe the charcoal canister holds the air that is displaced when you put fuel in the tank.

There is a "breather" hose of sorts near the fill neck that if clogged can cause this behavior...get the inlet area checked by a Volvo mechanic or indy mechanic who knows these cars.

thanks, it was a breather hose, i think its there, because of a safety reasons ,gas couldnt flow out when car rolls-over.
anyway, it was very dirty and after fixing, everything seems OK.

Thanks for reporting back. I have even heard of a spider building a nest in that breather hose clogging it (on another forum).
