A week ago the engine in my volvo 945 from 1992 stopped running, as I left the highway and stopped for a red light.
At first I just thought that I had a problem with some water in the ignition system, as it was a rainy day and the engine ran unevenly as if it was running on only 3 cylinders. Leaving the highway I was able to keep the engine running by pumping the speeder, but eventually the engine stopped running.
And then all attempts at restarting the engine, would turn the engine, but would not start it.
Now one week later we have tried most things that I can think of, but still the engine will not start...
First we suspected ether lack of gasoline or ignition, so we changed the in tank gas pump, the coil, distributor cap, rotor, sparc plugs, ignition cables, gearbox sensor, checked fuses and checked for broken cables.... But to no avail...
We have a feeling that we maybe see a lack of a good ignition, but then, we do see some ignition if we take out a sparcplug and turn the engine.
Dont ask why, but we tried to tow the car and the tried starting the car by putting it in gear, and then it started and ran beautifully. However when we turn it off and leave it to cool a little, then we are back to square 1 with an engine that just will not start.
At the moment we really don't know what to do except for visiting a certified volvo shop. Does any of you out there have a clues as to how to solve this ?

hello,
when this happens normally there are 3 main reasons:
1-fuel pump relay gone bad(its located under the fusebox you have to remove the fuse box to see it 4 torx screws have to be removed)
2-fuel pump failing(you need to hear it buzzing slighlty in the trunk
3-ignition coil is bad.
be sure that these 3 items are good and if they are ok a deeper inspection is needed.
even my car is a 850 the problems are similar with these volvo models and its a very common occurence.

I too would lay odds on fuel pump relay as first point of call.
Good Luck, hope you get it sorted.
