'94 940 wagon automatic Shiftlock Overdrive

After starting my car, I have been unable to move the shifter out of the Park position without manually pushing the button at the bottom of the shifter to unlock it. So essentially it seems as though I am overriding the shifter that is locked. I have never had to do this before, but now this is the "normal" way I drive my car, and it is only when I move it from the Park position. The car has about 167,000 miles on it. Thanks!

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

There is a micro-switch which controls the shiftlock. This has been known to fail on many occasions. Volvo have produced a service fix kit which can be installed by someone who is handy.

If you decide to go that route post back for the fixing instructions.

That is one question I can't answer as I don't know the cost of the kit. However, my repair times book shows labour of just over an hour.

Again, thank you. I did some research and the kit looks to be about $40 (or at least was that much a few years ago). My concern at this point is by not getting this repaired, am I making the problem worse or causing any more damage to the car?

I can't see how you would make things worse. The manual release is there for such an eventuality.
