That describes using a VW air pump that will save you a lot of money by not using the ridiculously expensive Volvo part.
I haven't seen anything about tricking the car into thinking it's working, maybe others have run across that. But I'm willing to bet that if were to disconnect the air pump and you can get the lower oxygen sensor to hold a constant voltage that would emulate the pump being on, the car would think it was working and run accordingly. I wonder if one of your oxygen sensors/mass air flow is bad in the first place and causing the black smoke; ideally, even with that light on, the engine shouldn't be running so rich anyway that it's blowing raw fuel out the exhaust. I wonder if it's possible that your car really has more stored codes that you're clearing instead of just the air pump?
