Hi. I have a 1994 850. I'm changing the front brake pads for the first time and need step by step instructions. I understand it's a pretty simple job but have never done it before. I lost my job a couple of months ago and can't afford to pay a mechanic so I'm going to try it myself. I checked the repair database and couldn't find any info on this for the 850.
Please advise.
Thanks.

Bev,
Where are you located? there may be folks on here who may be nearby and can help. This is a great forum, so if you get stuck in process, be sure to post back and someone will be able to help.
Good luck!

I should have ordered my door check from Darrell Waltrip Volvo.
$62 at the local Volvo, $37 from him, and fast shipping.
I ordered aftermarket from iPd, $29, but shipping could be faster by mule.

I ordered the same part from FCP, no complaints on service or shipping but 90 days later it was as bad as what I originally replaced. I just open and close the door gently for the time being (sheesh).I ordered aftermarket from iPd, $29, but shipping could be faster by mule.

If iPd sends out putzy parts, I don't know what my reaction would be.
Perhaps it is better to be safe, and buy factory part for something that gets as much use as a door check.
Right now, there is no check in my driver door, and I too am gentle.
Back on track, I am considering doing my back brakes myself, and have never done them. Since I R/R'd the ECC blower [and door check, and just "fixed" the wiper fluid check valve with a knife and a piece of gum], I'm becoming more interested in hand-on car repairs. The weather has improved, which also helps.

The back pads are even easier than the fronts. There are two pins that hold them in place. The procedure is to push the caliper pistons back (I use a big screwdriver), knock the pins out (I use a nail set), remove the old pads, grease up the backs of the new pads and shims and drop them in, replace the pins.
I takes longer to jack the car up and remove the wheel than it does to change the rear brake pads.
If you are going all the way and changing the parking brake shoes that is a little more intense but I have a writeup in the database for that.

The rear discs are rusty, as if there is no contact with the pads.Ozark Lee wrote:If you are going all the way and changing the parking brake shoes that is a little more intense but I have a writeup in the database for that.

The front pads are 80,000 miles old, with no sign of requiring replacement [highway driver].
I recently console-adjusted the parking brake [funny, how a garage will tell you it can't be tightened up anymore, or it will start hanging], and it appears well.
Though I'd bet a nickel the rear parking brakes have never been serviced.
