1998 GLT-70 coolant fan runs continually

Post by raquette »

coolant fan does not shut off until the temp gauge goes to 0, then it will turn off after car has been shut off and siting for awhile. Last year I replaced he thremostat and temp has been running normal at mid gauge (not overheating).

I disconected the e-plug attached to fan shrould, which shut off the fan, but the motor developed a high idle, so I reconnected for now.

Is this the temporature sensor, if so where is it located?

thanks All.

Yes, it does sound like the temp sensor- it's located at the base of the thermostat housing- facing the radiator...it has 2 wires running out of it. Just make sure the connector is clean first before replacing it- but what you describe is typical when it goes bad.

What if you replace the sensor in the therm. housing yet the problems persists? As soon as I start my 2000 S70 the fan begins to click on then off continuously.

My ac is usually on all the time. I keep everything on auto, and the temps here in southern AZ are mostly warm.

Your problem sounds more like a low refrigerant level in the A/C system. Anytime the A/C compressor is running the radiator fan should kick on. If the compressor is cycling due to a low charge the fan will cycle as well.

Ok I put a can in and nothings really changed. The pressure (level) was good. Do you think I may need another can? The fan is still running after I shut the car off too especially now that were getting into the upper 90s....

Thanks
