FUN IN THE SUN - ROOF (a.k.a. The Illusive Topic?)

Hello all. I am new here. Just bought my 3rd Volvo. A green, 1997, 850 T5, 150kmiles. I would rank it's condition an 8 out of 10. Got it for $1800 here in Jupiter FL. Have been feverishly reading all I can about it like a kid in a candy store. One topic that seems to be surprisingly rare to find is sunroof issues / repair advice. It seems like it would be a common issue to me because my new 850 as well as my last '97 960 wagon both have/had similar symptoms (problems) with the sunroof. The roof "hold area/rear area" has debris and /or broken pieces in it probably and the roof won't slide back into it's open position area. My real "question" is regarding the removal of the headliner and/or how to access the area to troubleshoot. Yes, I know some dare not to venture here but I thought I'd start a Topic about it so maybe myself and others can help each other through this specific area.

welcome peffley, may i suggest in regards to sun roof repairs that you go to ozark lee's posting of nov.26, 2006 entitled '850 sunroof headliner repair', it gives an excelent step by step guide to removing sunroof and shade, hopefully should cover your problem, see you later.

F.Y.I: Just checked Ozarks info out. Good stuff but that's not about the headliner. It's about the cloth coming off of the sunroof "shade".

I just found a good post regarding the sunroof tracks and track access/troubleshooting by Maxbaby:

I will post INFO after I "dive" into my sunroof to fix it. It sounds like you can access tracks through the top (with glass and shade removed). I had just assumed you needed to go in through the bottom, in through the ceiling/headliner, to access the track area. Will let u know. Thanks again!! -Peff
