Does this have a good cost/benefit ratio?
Is it delicate/high FUBAR possibility?

I've never done it but some swear by it, especially if they have "tuned" their car. I figure high octane gas and the occasional bottle of Chevron Techron keeps them clean.

I like to DIY this procedure on my injectors at home.

You'll be amazed at the crap that comes out when you backflush an injector.

Anyone here have any updated information? Unfortunately, this post didn't go very far. But now that these cars are even older, perhaps a simple flush + o-ring replacement is called for.

Having the injectors in an ultrasonic bath is a must every 80K miles and even sooner. Any gasoline will leave a varnish inside the injector which will reduce the flow and change the pattern and significantly decrease the mpg. Especially true if the car was most of the time driven below 3000rpm. The filter basket on the injector might be perfectly clean, is the nozzle that has varnish build up.
Side note, only a ultrasonic bath can remove this varnish, no 'injector cleaner' sold in stores can help.

80K, eh? Geeze...wonder how they look after 214,500? Never been off the manifold either. Thought I'd at least replace the o-rings & other gaskets.
I wonder where I could get this done locally, or at least within the state of Tx to minimize car downtime?

Here's a post with information on DIY injector cleaning with Seafoam.
Followup: I did soak my orange injectors in Seafoam overnight some time after that post, around summer 2012, and have had good results*. I'll do it again.
* read: outside of doing this on a statistically relevant fleet of identical cars (100+), my summary is that yes it works... fuel economy and power were as good as ever, or better, after this, and my 850 did not blow up/fall apart/catch on fire

Thanks Matt. I used BG's fuel injector cleaning solution + their jig that hooks straight up to the injector rail and powers the car for about 20min, on my previous SAAB 900T. I recall it made quite a difference. Also cleaned out the combustion chamber.
I might go this route again, except this time I would first remove the injectors, replace the screens & seals, backflush, and THEN do the BG soln cleaning. After all, if mine were in such bad shape, the car would stumble, choke, shake, and spit and even worse under boost. It does none of that. Further, the sled sees regular use. It's my DD, not a weekend car or Summer car by any means.
This will make for an interesting investigation......

But yea, backflushing before that makes much sense. Otherwise you're pushing insolvent debris particles the same direction they've been trying to go for five or ten years... through the too-small injector pathways.
