Replacing 1998 S70 front axle
Replacing 1998 S70 front axle
I think my '98 S70 has a bad axle on the driver's side. It makes a loud clicking noise when making a left or right turn and it feels lose in normal driving conditions. The local Volvo shop told me to replace the CV boot a while back. I never did it so now I've got a bigger problem. He quoted $400-$450 to replace the left axle. I'd rather do the job myself if I can and save $$! Can anybody help me with the step-by-step process on this repair?

I replaced a torn outer CV boot on the driver's side on my 98 S70. Some would argue that if going to the trouble to remove the axle, that you should just replace the axle, but for $10 - $15 boot versus the cost of the axle, I much preferred to repack the CV with grease and change the boot.
It sounds like your CV is shot, so as was suggested, you probably need to replace the whole axle.
My opinion is that removing the axle was not a monumental task (also less daunting on the driver's side versus the passenger side), so I think replacing the axle whole would be about a 6 on a 1-10 scale. The thing that consumed the greater amount of energy and time for me was removing and reinstalling the CV joint itself from the axle which is not an issue for those just swapping the entire axle.
