If you're buying a fuel filter locally, make sure it has "Bosch" stamped on it.

Now...the bad news...
As if Bea Arthurs death wasn't hard enough on me...it looks like my beloved does in fact have a blown HG. It is ever so slight and closes up at operating temp. Thats why she's been fooling with me. But sho enough...when she's cools off a little is when she's hard starting and I noticed some fairly dense puffs. It cleared up once the needle hit 3 o'clock and I couldn't duplicate it no matter how hard I tried. I am letting it cool off now and see what will happen next. There was a faint trace of milkshake on the dipstick, but only on the upper poriton not at the bottom...odd. I thought maybe it was from all the water the thing surely sucked in through the intake while the radiator was leaking and belching steam last week. I found nilkshake in the intake elbow last night when I was had it off to change the cap and rotor. I don't have a garage anymore so I am going to have to take it to old DW. She's almost due for a timing belt and water pump so I might as well throw that in there.
Somebody gave me this car, but I'm sure paying for it now.
If there is any chance I might be wrong in my diagnosis jump in and save my bacon.

Okay fella's...I am thoroughly baffled...
It got dark before I could really take a good look at what was coming out of the tailpipe last night. Diagnosis from the rear view mirro isn't always the best thing. So this morning I started her up after sitting all night. She was puffing like the little engine that could...but...it isn't anti freeze. It smells more like a very rich mixture. I did notice one potentially bad omen...I saw a perfect smoke ring...just one...I always was told that if you see smoke rings you have a valve problem. But it was only one so I'm going to ignore it for now.
Anyway...the only mod on this car is the airbox tinfoil trick so she IS getting some pretty cold air (48 degrees this morning) at start up. Is there an enrichment control for cold weather running? Once the needle hits 3 o'clocl it runs fine. I did go to DW yesterday for the $19.95 oil change special. They used synthetic. Could this be it? The Milkshake I saw on the dipstick is definietely residue from the tube and condensation. The pcv is in TERRIBLE shape and needs to be done this week.
Can you point me to the thread that showed how to read the codes on the port under the hood? Maybe I'm throwing a code that would explain this. MIJ...is this sounding more and more like the ECT? Does ECT control idle richness? I'll tell ya...this is the first serious issue I've had with this car and thank goodness for this site. Thanks Matt and the mods!

Yes, the ECT controls idle/richness by understanding the temperature of the car. Here is where the codes are: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?t=10758

Just read the codes...that was easy and it doesn't seem to be bad news. Several misfires cylinder issues but that was probably from when the spark plug wires burned through the boot on one cylinder and I never reste those codes. The only one I couldn't figure out is 121 solenoid S-1 short circuit or control module bad...is S-1 the ECT? That would explain it.

OKay...read my codes this morning and just re-read them after resetting them and driving the car about 10 miles. No codes except 2-1-1 "left front wheel sensor no signal on moving off"
I am not sure what that means. Also...is it possible for the injectors to be spraying any fuel into the cylinder after shut down. Something is leaking into the cylinder overnight.

Talked to a Volvo tech friend of mine back home. He thinks my symptoms sound like the T-belt stretched when the car got hot. Now I'm off a tooth. He told me it is very hard to blow the HG on a Volvo because they are actually machines to fit and not just flat against flat.
Anyone ever had experience with the "one tooth off" scenario?
