Hi guys, I posted in my previous thread about my new (to me) 242, that started making a lot of noise going into gear, and the engine racing when I gave it gas.
I took it to the mechanic, who thinks it is the transmission, and that it isn't worth fixing on this car. He estimated repair costs of 1500-2000. But he hasn't dropped the tranny and actually looked at it.
I just got my hands on Bentley's manual, and from his trouble shooting section, it sounds like this is a clutch problem, ie slipping, improper cable play, or damaged clutch components.
I am not a gear-head by any means, but I have done a lot of repairs to my 850, and armed w/ Bentley's manual, I feel pretty confident that I might be able to fix this clutch issue myself.
Is dropping the transmission and then fixing the clutch an overly difficult/time consuming job for the average person?
Any tips/ good write ups w/ photos online?
Thanks!
-Ryan

I don't know of any write ups with pictures but this will get you started.
As you can see from this you need a clutch alignment tool to install the clutch properly. You should be able to hire one of these.
Bill.

I have recovered my 240 Haynes 1974 to 1986 models and these instructions are from that book:
If yours is cable operated take note of the advice on clutch slip in the fault finding section.
