240 1990 Air Conditioning (Malaysia)

Post by GeorgeKL »

Hope someone can help with this one. It's strange.

The air-con is bog standard i.e. just a big switch with on-off and a 4 speed fan. No temp control or anything fancy and the cold air flows out of the dashboard vents only.

Most times, the system works fine but I have a problem when on longer, high speed runs. After around 3-3.5 hours at highway speeds, the airflow to the drivers (RH here in Malaysia) just gradually peters out. The passenger side stays fine, just my side goes, it doesn't matter what the fan setting. If we then hit into a town at lower speeds or sit at idle for a while, the flow gradually comes back until it returns to normal.

Help please as Madam is getting a bit sick of me nicking half her air flow when mine packs up so I don't dissolve!

The shutters that control the direction of the airflow are vacuum operated. There is a vacuum tank behind/under the dash which is for the heater system only. As you have airflow from the dash vents only I would suspect that one or more of your vacuum hoses are leaking or have disconnected.

On your longer runs, at practically constant engine speed, the vacuum to your side of the dash must be leaking and not being recreated. Once you start varying the engine revs in town traffic the vacuum is recreated.

You need to get under the dash to find the pipes and check/replace them. It is easier to do if you remove the glove box.

Thanks Bill. It looks like Labour Day will be spent elbows deep in dashboard then.

As an aside, I like your part of the world, and used to spend a lot of time in the NE when I still lived in the UK. I lived up in the Peak District, so some similar scenenery.

Asia all the way for me now though!

We often head into the Peak District with the Autosleeper as my late brother in law and his wife were just over the border in Staffs. Grin Low site just outside of Buxton is as near Asia as I need to go at my time of life.

Good luck.
