Magic Marker like smell with A/C on 2000 V70

I have a really odd one on my hands-2000 V70 with 149,000 on the clock. Intermittently it will blow "fog/mist" from the AC on the passenger side(primarily) and it smells for all the world like a dry erase magic marker--almost an electrical/clutch smell at times. The "fog" and the smell may be related but also may be coincidental-A/C operates fine--no visible leak on the floor, no coolant smell--NOT a mold type odor. I have noted that the passenger side also has trouble clearing the windshield if it fogs up even on high/defrost setting. Driver's side clears fine. Kids have not inserted anything in the duct-nothing visible it is persistent and really can be strong when it starts. Local tech advises do nothing until something breaks but I have always been more proactive since this is She-who-must-be-obeyed's vehicle. Suggestions/comments??

Perhaps you could pull the cabin filter and see if something is showing itself. I am asuming it is either a mild refirgerant or coolant leak and some signs may be present on the filter.

If there is no oily residue I am betting on a small coolant leak.

Well, I'd do that except we replaced the filter last week...I may call and ask the tech what he saw when it was done or look at in over the next week

The filter itself, when new, can smell like that.

If it's not giving you a headache or causing hallucinations, crank up that fan and enjoy the scent! Better than new car IMO ;)

I would think the heater core has a small leak.
