'04 XC90 burning oil like crazy

Post by robk »

A few months ago our '04 XC90 began consuming oil at a high rate. It can be down 3+ quarts in little time and is not leaking it. Is this a known issue for this model with known remedy? Thanks for any guidance. Rob K.

It is not a known issue... have you had any major engine work done? Also, how has it been maintained?

Thanks for the replies. The car has about 140K miles on it, and we've changed the oil regularly. Routine maintenance, no accidents. No major engine work other than changing the timing belt. It was in previously for a cold weather stalling problem that was partially fixed by replacing an air intake part in which moisture was freezing and clogging it.

What engine do you have? Are you running synthetic oil? How often was it changed? You might have a clogged PCV system and just haven't blown a seal yet. I wouldn't let it get 3 quarts down anymore. That's too low, IMO. I would check the level more often and add when it's a maximum of 1 quart low.

Thanks. I believe it's a 6 cylinder, not sure of other details - would need to look them up. Uses regular oil. I'll check into the PCV.

How many miles are on your engine? It might be sludged up already. I would try the auto-rx recommended above to attempt to clean the sludge out. After that, I'd switch to synthetic oil. Cleaning the PCV is a real PITA, which is why I recommend the auto-rx first. If the auto-rx doesn't work, you'll probably have to pull the intake manifold off to access the oil separator. Keep an eye on your oil pressure light - make sure it doesn't come on while the engine is running.
